Hi All,

My new truck has a camper shell and I thought a hitch aid would help with the hooking up process. Visibility is somewhat less now. I know you can buy something like this for around $20 plus shipping, but I thought a trip through HD/Lowes would yield something as good for less money. Hey, it's winter anyways and I have to keep busy.

Here's my parts list and apx. costs :

1 1x2x8 piece of wood (straight is best) $1.00
1 2" pipe clamp (electrical dept) $1.35
1 1 1/4" pipe clamp $1.25

some spray paint and duct tape

Total cost about $5.00

One more thing - what happens when you're aligned over the ball - does the one on the hitch get pushed over?

Chris,

That's the one thing on this setup that I need to tweak. As it stands now, it lines up perfectly but I have to step out, remove the hitch aid, and back up another inch or so. I'm working on the blue pole now, maybe make it thinner or offset it somehow so I gain that inch or so to back up more. Will post when done!

You could add a 1 x 2 bumper to the front of the blue pole fo that the orange pole would knock it over when the hitch is just forward of the ball.

Nice idea!

How about taking the orange pole and attaching it so it sits on the top of the hitch? Maybe use the latching lever to hold it in place.

Enquiring minds would like to know if you have set up the heights of the poles so you know if your trailer is high enough to go over the ball?

What I need is something to tell me how FAR to back up. I can line up the trailer with the grid on my dog barrier in the car, but I always end up having to get out, check the distance, and move back a few more feet or inches.
