Sorry to bug you, but I was reading your window odyssey thread (wow, what a job and nicely done, btw) and I read this:

"My front window leaked. I removed it, removed the silicone, butyled it, and reseated the window. Next heavy rain it leaked again! Frustrated, and thinking I had a tired, 25 year old window here, I looked to replace it."

Well, right now we're intending to remove and re-butyl the windows on the Bigfoot, but this gave me pause. *What* do you think was causing your other window to keep leaking after being recaulked? I'm hoping to check our windows for whatever was wrong with yours - I'd hate to do the recaulking and reinstalling and then have to replace them anyway.

Not a problem, glad to help.

I believe the leaking was not from the caulk bed around the rim, but was from slanted rain entering through the verticle edges of the windows, which were sliders. They overlapped, and the original Burro window design probably also wasn't the result of world class engineering. The windows were also plastic sheets, and I think the gaskets holding them in place also were no longer viable.

It had me vexed, because I thought I had done a superb caulk job. Black butyl is serious stuff.

Thank you.

That reassures me since we're having the plexi re-installed at a glass shop (they guarantee it will be leak-free at the end of the process) and it is just the frame-to-trailer aspect that we have to seal. And I agree - black butyl really *is* some stuff!
