If it is a portable structure made from some type of fabric be it cloth or thin flexible plastic it is a tent. Even it if is just a tarp or a bed sheet hung over a rope between two trees. The words, shelter, screen room, popup, canopy, awning, etc are for marketing purposes to distinguish the form, function and features.

Even a fabric awning attached to the side of an RV or a sail shade or shade cloth is a a variation of a tent. Although if it is attached to an RV you probably won't get any flack about it since it is well secured in place.

the difference is, an awning is a popup overhead cover with no sides, while a tent is a 365 degree coverage.
