Removing counter top, Bigfoot 17?

Has anyone ever removed and replaced the countertop in an old Bigfoot 17? (mine is 1988) I am installing nice wooden tabletops elsewhere and the countertop is going to look mismatched and crappy by comparison.

I am wondering if there is a known trick to doing it without messing up any of the structure underneath. Is it possible I will be so lucky that it is screwed down from the top and all I need to do is peel off the formica to get to the screw heads?

The tops in our 1987 are screwed in from the bottom. Some through cleats and some through the framing. A cordless drill with an extension and the right bit made it pretty easy to remove them.

From what I can see, doing it that way will probably require removing the range and the refrigerator first. Part of the counter is behind and to the the other side of the range, in narrow strips, and there is no room at all above the refrigerator. Some of it even sticks up through it, requiring a weird pseudo-countertop ledge to hide it.

Looking further, the drawer liner blocks all access, so would probably have to be torn out and reconstructed. If they screwed it like that from underneath, they would have had to do it nearly first, meaning nearly everything they did after needs to be undone to get the same access.

I am thinking now of merely capping it and putting on some kind of trim to make it all look sort of like one slab of wood. I wanted to replace it with something thicker that overlapped more anyway. Much easier.
