Repair or replace ripped fg on door? '99 Burro.

Had the unfortunate incident of someone wrenching the door of our '99 Burro while giving them a "tour". Door was being held open with the little (and well secured) latch/tab - they leaned very heavily on the door while stepping down and it actually ripped the outer fg sheet and pulled it out of the aluminum door frame.

Question is whether the fg sheet can be repaired and made watertight, or should we just replace it? Loathe to replace and lose the vintage fg material (which matches the rock guard). Can a fg sheet like this be repaired from the backside and be made watertight? Can't imagine how repair could be done on front/outside face and look right. Advice appreciated.

One other question: When disassembling the door it was obvious there was prior leakage - wood piece across bottom and about 6-8" up the side pieces were rotted away. Is it structurally ok to replace only the lower portion of the side pieces, i.e. there will be a joint, or should it be one continuous piece down the side?

I hope these questions make sense, the pictures should help....you'll see lots of duct tape goo as we had to tape the damage to get it home in the rain from Canada to Seattle.

Well after several attempts to attach photos with same result "Error 503 service unavailable", I'm just posting the question and will add the photos once I figure out what's wrong.

Thanks for any advice!

Good heavens, this is so sad! And it makes me a bit paranoid about giving *tours* of the trailer. I'm sorry I don't have advice about your repair, but did your guest at least apologize for doing this damage?

Photos of ripped fg door...

So here are some photos of the damage. For those who aren't familiar with the "newer" Burros i.e. '99-'00, the doors are not molded fg. They are flat, constructed traditionally by sandwiching foam insulation and a wood frame between 2 sheets of flat fg panel, all held together by an aluminum frame. In the photos you can see the 2 rips in the panel. I've already removed the frame that holds it together.

Ellpea, yes, the woman who did the damage apologized profusely and offered to pay for the damage. In fact she wouldn't stop apologizing! Though a part of me just wanted to burst into sorrowful tears over the damage to my dear Burro, we were camped next to them and were in the process of sharing dinner together. In the long run of life I want to value relationships over things, so I chose to not hang on to resentment. But I will admit that it was a struggle and I will be very cautious about helping others climb in/out in the future!

Bummer! I feel your pain. The screen door in Ten Forward was bent by someone getting into my trailer... and it was only a week old

You might try this place, sorry but their website is dead. Looks like they're only on Facebook now: https://www.facebook.com/WestCoastRvRecyclingAndSales

Sorry but I don't know enough about these doors to know the answer to this question so I have to ask it.. is it possible that the damage only occurred because there was rotted wood? In other words, do you think that if the rot was not there then the damage would not have been done by the actions of your guest?
I ask because I want to know how careful to be with these doors (my AND my guests).

I think you have it Gordon, looks like some rot going on there. This may be a blessing in disguise as the frame does need to be repaired. I had somewhat the same thing happen on a class C. The wind slammed the door against the coach and it came apart like that. I had some rotting in it and didn't know it....until then. Built a whole new frame .
