Roof sagging

I just got a new to me Playpac yesterday and I need helppppp. The roof has a very bad sag (could even be sagging up to 3" in the middle of the sag). The sag is about 2 foot long anyway.

There are plenty more things to do but the condition in this one is 100 times better than in my old one I had years ago. I finally gave up on that one and sold it because it was just too much for me.

Playpac is squared with a flat roof.

Thanks!

Hi, Camilla-

Can you post a picture?
It's hard to visualize the sag you're talking about...
I don't think fiberglass stretches, per se. I think there ought to be just a bit of a "rounding" of your roof.
Is it possible it can be "popped" back out, like a dent???

Francesca

I'll try to get a photo tomorrow thanks. The dip up there could probably hold a few gallons of water!

There is a difference between stretching and sagging. Even steel bridges sag.

But-
Doesn't one side of a steel I-beam (or whatever) have to stretch for that to happen?
I think steel is more malleable than fiberglass...
I'm only suggesting to Camilla that the roof may be "pooched" in, and might be popped out again.

Francesca

Hi Francesca

My 72-73 PlaPac had an outer and inner wall in except around the door and windows. I saw one other member that had a similar problem and his solution was reinforcement bars on the top.

Hi Camilla
I did a search and I could not find the photo. It was a member here, I know that for sure. I think he screwed two 2X4's lengthwise along the top and then fiberglassed them in. He did some cosmetic cuts at the front and the back of the 2X4's and when he was finished, it looked really good. If one were not familiar with that particular unit, one might have thought it was original.

You could fix it on the exterior, ala Fiberstream. here's a picture of Frederick's Fiberstream roof: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...html#post81835 You may want to read the entire topic since it's about a sagging roof.

Thanks Donna that looks like a real good solution. I guess with that I won't need any inside supports. It doesn't look like the Playpac has any cabinets or anything like many of the others that support the roof from the floor up.

Mike Watters had an extensive collection of pictures of his PlayPac resto. Unfortunately, I can't find a link to his offsite photo album. Maybe he'll step in and provide some assistance.

My Fiber Stream is a Second Generation design, which incorporated the roof ridge support into the mold. The original First Generation design (see post #24) had the roof molded flat (like your PlayPac) with metal stiffener bars oriented side-to-side bolted to the top through the fiberglass.

My Compact Jr. roof had a bad sag over the kitchen due to the divider wall being removed by a previous owner. Since I liked the openness of the space that way, I compensated for the missing wall by adding a 9' long 2x2" angle iron along both sides of the opening for the Pop-Top, oriented front-to-back.

Remember to put Butyl Tape along the underside of the support bar(s) you use, similar to window installations to seal the through-bolts.

Fred, thanks for the reply. Would you happen to have any photos of this fix?

Thanks Joe that is interesting. I have a bit of concern about the added weight up there. I'm worried that if I add weight to the top without some kind of bracing from the floor inside the camper that the sides might start poking out and my door will get all funky.

Anyone want to fill me in on that??

Thanks

Sorry, I looked through my album of it and I didn't photograph that. I sold that trailer in 2004 after I bought the Fiber Stream.

Thanks. I got an estimate today to reinforce the roof and get the sag out. He wanted $1000. I really didn't expect it would cost that much.
