Roof Top Carrier

Does anyone here have a "Bag" type rooftop carrier for thier tug? I want one that does not have to attach to a rack, cause, well, I don't HAVE a rack and don't want one

Looking online, It is hard to see how some of them attach.

Any experience and how does your attach etc...

Gina, I'd worry about anything riding on the roof that's not attached to some sort of rack...even one that hooks on the rain gutters (remember those??) would be better than just laying on the paint.....chaffing of the paint finish could be a problem. Even laying it on a soft blanket may cause enough rubbing to ruin the finish.

I don't think I would want to put a bag directly on top of the vehicle. A much more expensive but better way would be to get a Yakima or Thule cargo basket system. They're initial expense is high, but thay last a life time and it costs very little to move it from one vehicle to next. There's little hook things that attach to the rain gutters. Yes there are rain gutters on all cars. They're hidden behind the top of the door on newer cars. I ran through the Yakima sites selection process. For your element a basket is $330 including locks to lock the basket to your car. Like I said not cheap.

I've had a Yakima rack system for about 15 years. Moved ski racks to about 3 different vehicles. Cost of each move was about $20.00 in new pieces.

I have one of those, but I only used it once attached to a metal roof rack. I think I still have the hooks for attaching to the gutter.

The cautions about chafing are worth listening to. However, if you put a non-skid pad underneath, I think it would not chafe. That's the ones that look like waffle weave and are rubber coated.

Mike Bullard was kind enough to send me his unused one. At least I think that is what the notice I got from the PO today is. I KNOW it ain't no xmas present, my friends are too cheap!
