LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (January 7, 2003 12:34 p.m. EST) - A judge convicted
of registering a motor home in another state to avoid paying sales taxes
has quit the bench, after serving just long enough to qualify for a
pension.
District Judge Rodney P. Owens was convicted in July but continued
fighting the Arkansas Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission's
efforts to remove him until after the first of the year, when he
qualified for a pension. He had been on the bench 10 years.
"It obviously was in his best interest," said Drew Miller, one of Owens'
lawyers. He still plans to appeal his conviction and $10,000 fine,
Miller said.
Owens, whose law
license was suspended, had not heard any cases since
his arrest in December
2001.
Prosecutors said Owens, 55, of Bentonville, had his $103,000 motor home
to be registered at a fictitious address in Oregon, which has no sales
or use tax on vehicles. After learning he was being investigated, he
paid about $10,000 in taxes, interest and penalties.

It happens - although in this case, you're probably better off being one
of the unwashed masses, than one of the elite. However, in this time of
most States running serious deficits, they may start looking for
anyplace to find a penny.
Are your papers in order?
