For those of us who have been restoring older eggs...
I needed to get a rubbing or a photo of my '86 Scamp's
VIN number, but it was no where to be found. A search began. I did find out where it
should be.
"On the top, right side of the frame, just behind the coupler." .....and,
"It is also typed on a label attached to the inside if the same frame member."
But, there was
no label on my 86, and I saw no stamped numbers on its frame. I also wondered, which is the "right" side? Out comes the
paint remover solvents, wire brushes, steel wool, etc. Cleaning off 24 years of
paint on the "right" side led to near panic - until I figured out that the "right" side was not the street side, but the curb side.
After more
paint remover the stamped 17 digit
VIN began to appear, right where they said it would be - on the CURB side, top of frame, just behind the coupler, along with the date, 8/86, above it.
See it in the picture? No? Of course you can't.
Whew! After steel wooling and metal polishing It was still hard to read because of corrosion and wear, and a not very deep factory stamping, but it
was unmistakeable. A photo would have to do. All efforts to get a decent rubbing failed.
