Securing drawers while traveling

So excited to finally have our Sweetpea (2017 13' Scamp) in our possession! anyone figured out a good way to keep the drawers closed while traveling?

Karen, the only drawer we had on our Standard 13 was the silverware drawer. If it was pushed all the way in; it never opened on the road. If you meant the cabinet doors, that was a bit of a problem until I "pinched" the metal clips on the doors so they would hold tighter to the rollers on the cabinet. I used pliers and gently closed the clips a little at a time, until they were a little stiff to close. Same fix for the curtain rods if you find them falling off when under way.

The refrigerator door has a locking latch to keep it closed on the road as well. If you study it, you'll see it has two positions. If you close the frig door and swing the latch to hold it, it should stay shut. For storage, you can open the door a little and swing the latch in order to hold the door open to air it out and prevent mold. If the latch itself (ours was black) loosens, simply tighten it with a phillips screwdriver.

We always load the biggest, heaviest things on the floor and close to the axle to prevent surprises when we check the trailer at gas or rest stops. Good luck with your new trailer. You will love it!

It's a little messy, but I use white duct tape to keep things shut when I'm traveling.

There's this thing called kinetic energy. When released can cause things to happen. Heavy objects have more of this energy than light objects. When you start an object moving it go until something stops it.

Now how does this apply to drawers and cabinet doors. Simple, when stuff in cabinets or drawers moves and hits the front of the drawer or a cabinet door there is often enough energy to open said items.

Options to prevent such an occurrence. Keep only light items in storage places with doors or drawers. Keep the items from moving by various means. Fix the doors and drawers so it takes more energy to open i.e. tape or hardware.

Here's what I've done. Overhead cupboards have the stuff in plastic boxes of appropriate sizes that or tight fitting so they don't move. And only light stuff in the drawer. Very little problem in 11 years and close to
100,000 miles.

We use a system of small screw-in eyelets and fasteners.

Closets? One screw eye on door and one on the frame with a small 'hairpin' fastener engaging both

Stack of drawers? One screw eye in top frame and one screw eye in bottom frame with a thin tube or rod down through the two (we use a tiny threaded rod with a nut on upper end)

I have used a strip of velcro on a fridge door that kept opening. It was a dorm type AC fridge, no door lock. I had the velcro about 2" on the front and 3" on the side, so the strip wrapped around.

On drawers that just won't stay closed, a plastic child-proof catch can help. Hardware stores have them.

I use bungee cords through the handles. That way I have no permanent eyesores. Of course, you need the right handles.
Light items go in top cupboards and heavy items in lower cupboards.

Walmart sells containers of 10 little black bungee cords about the diameter of a shoe string and 6" long. Attach one end of the cord to the locking side of the fridge and stretch it to the hinge side bracket. It matches the trim color of the fridge so isn't noticed. When you travel lift the cord up and over the knob of the silverware drawer. We have traveled many miles in our 13' scamp and have never had a problem with fridge or drawer. Occasionally the overstuffed closet door wants to open. We use another small bungee cord looped around the closet knob and stretch it to the knob on the screen door and that keeps everything closed. You're getting the new type of screen door so it may not have a knob. You have purchased a great little trailer, hope you enjoy it for many years.

This has probably been the biggest challenge in our Campster. I use Glenn's bungee solution and have smaller bolts by the dorm fridge but but things are still opening part way. I've seen some ideas to try and will continue to watch for more.

Bungees. We even use on the entry door when going down the road, looped through the access handle and around the door knob.

We had a silverware drawer that kept sliding out every time we moved. I really couldn't figure out a good solution without using tape or bungee cords . So I went back to Escape and Reese installed cupboard door catches on the top of the drawer inside. That's solution worked perfectly and never comes out the now . You can see the little metal catch at the top of the drawer but it really doesn't bother us.

Karen, I had the same problem with my silverware drawer on my Scamp 13. Working on the latches didn't help so I resorted to duct tape. I finally permanently solved the problem by drilling a 1/4-inch hole through the fiberglass cabinet and the drawer and inserted a 6 inch pin. No more problems.
