Is White Silicone the preferred sealant for a FG Trailer? How does it compare to Vulkem and is there some places that one is preferred over another? I have another post where I have a delta antenna leaking. Removed and reinstalled with white silicone. Still leaking. Should I try again with Vulkem or is it as good or the same?? Thanks
Can you give us a picture of what you're working on? Is there any way you can use butyl to seal it? By butyl I mean the tape you use to seal windows etc. I have used it many places with sucess if there is enough surface for it to seal on.
WOw!! didn't know that. I will pull it and reseal it with the tape. The next question would be the belly band on the Scamp. Since that can't be done with tape, how whould that be done?
Also, the scamp has all the little screws and buttons on the outside that the previous owner said he used silicone on. A dab at each fastener. WHat type of sealant for that? Thanks
OK, after reading the entire post on sealing I see that the Butyl tape seems to be the best. There is also some marine grade sealant recommended in there also. The Delta Antenna manufacturer recommends Vulkem, so thats what is confusing.

I have talked to a friend who is a roofer and it seems that Vulcam is Butyl Rubber.
It is just a slightly different consistency and in a tube usually not in strips.
Just some info for what it may be worth.
I know when installing Sat.dishes on roofs I have used them interchangebly.The wide butyl pads are referred to in that applications as "Pitch Pads" and are just butyl in a large format with the release paper on both sides.
Using Vulcam is the messiest most unforgiving task I think I have ever done,but it will not leak either.
Come to think of it Butyl in any form is so nasty it will only work with itself.I have never been able to work with it or remove it without using another peice of it like a magnet sort of.
I suppose that is why it seals so well.It also stays somewhat flexible for a very long time.
Like Greg above I used the 3M Marine Sealant ....Really great stuff. they have two types...The seven day cure(which i used to seal a underwater fiberglass tank) and the One Day cure (which i would probably use for various items around the fiberglass world as i believe it would be easier to remove if need be)

Where the removal and reinstallion of something is not on the agenda (for butyl tape), I have found that clear RTV sealant available at an automotive store or department has worked the best for me.
