Simple question

I have acquired a 13’ burro and I have no idea what year it is, there was no paper work. Is there a way to tell what year it is? Is it part of the VIN number?

Thank you for any help on this simple question.

Gage, You would think you are asking a simple question, but that is not the case. I have four Trillium trailers, and at least one of them is way older then the previous owner had it registered as. In response I have started the following thread in an attempt to help the other owners determine the year of their trailers.

Gage, You need to start reading up on how to get a title when you have no paperwork like a title and bill of sale. It gets quite frustrating in some states.

If it was a California trailer when you acquired it, and if it was ever registered in California, you might get some information from the DMV based on the VIN and the license plate. Did you get ANY kind of paperwork...Bill of Sale, Transfer of Title, etc.? California may get a little cranky about letting you register it without some sort of validation or affidavit of ownership. They may even try to stick you for past years registration fees if it was never put on non-operational status.

All Burros (at least those manufactured in Plymouth MN and Sac City, IA... and yes, even those sold as "kits") have the VIN stamped on the top of the street side tongue rail about 8" behind the back of the coupler. It may be faint, and it's entirely possible that the VIN has been filled in and covered up with paint over the years. You may need to scrape the area with a knife blade to find the VIN. They didn't stamp them particularly deeply.

Escondido CA Burro (1998-2002) affixed a sticker containing VIN# curb side of tongue behind coupler and on door jamb. IIRC, only 14' and 17' wide body trailers were produced by this later company.

On the later Burro Travel Trailer LLC trailers the year of manufacture is listed on the sticker separate from the VIN. Don't know about the Sac City Iowa trailers.

Maybe if you post the VIN you have, other Burro owners can tell you if it is older or newer than what they have.

VIN 12345678901234567 the year should be in the "0" position. If you have a couple cars you should be able to confirm this. And this assumes the builder of your Burro used the standard, set by US DOT.

I have a VIN decoder for service work on cars. Generally first digit is country of manufacture (IE: USA=1, CANADA=2, MEXICO=3, EU=W, etc). The second and third usually are manufacture specific (IE: GM, VW, AU, etc). The forth through ninth digits are features and equipment codes (IE: engine type, trans type, abs type, SRS type, etc). The tenth digit is the year of manufacture. The eleventh digit is called a check digit (some manufactures use this to tell which plant built the vehicle). The rest of the digits are a serial number for the vehicle.

This info is kind of general and was for some import models. But some of the info maybe useful for not just this Burro but other trailers as well.

17 digit VIN's only started in 1981 with the letter "B" in the 10th position.
For starters it increments each year until "H" in 1987, skips "I" and goes on with "J" in 1988. That should cover any Burros

And then in 2001 they change from alphabet to numbers. In 2010 they started the alphabet over again. For years before 1981 you have a manufacture specific serial number. From those years and older you have to depend on clubs and manufacture resources to make sense of the info.

Hopefully this info will be a resource for everyone to use.

If you have a 17 digit VIN, then yes it is part of the VIN. See the explanation in post #9.
If you have a shorter Manufacturer's Serial Number then maybe not.

I don't know about Burros, but my 1978 Fiber Stream did include the year as part of the short Manufacturer's serial number.
But the 1971 Compact Jr. did not include the year.

It may be a simple question, but there is no standard simple answer.
