Yes, a big thumbs up to Lanny for stepping up to fill this need.

Once you get this process down, I'm sure you could make a small profit on eBay.

Lanny,

Sounds very promising. Let us know if we need to hire the kid across the street to cut your grass or take out the trash. Give us the number of the local restaurant that delivers and we can order delivery for you. Anything we can do it make life better while you are in the process to avoid distractions. Thanks for the efforts and expense to make these lens. I know I am way back in line but I am excited about your progress. Good luck and all the best.

Lens Prototype

Here is a pict of the first run. I need to wait three more days till the paint fully curs then fill sand the places I've circled that still have some small pits. As you can see the word UHaul and Top will be less distinct but till there. They will not be as good as the original but hopefully good enough to suit you.

I think they look very good! They look a lot better than the 27 year old ones that are currently being used. You are doing fabulous ... congrats on a your success to date.

I'm still interested in an all red lens, and better yet if it was one piece. Thanks for your continuing work on this project. Bob

Lanny, I'm happy to see you are still at it. I think the example looks great. Remember to keep me on your list. Solid red or amber and red would be fine with me.
Thanks for the update.

Pardon the stupid question... Is that a really dark red lens or your mold? By the way, solid red lenses are fine for us if the two color is not possible.

I think that is the core for the mold.

Kevin Not a stupid question at all and Tom you are correct.
As a recap.
What I did was polish as best I could an existing lens. Then make a mold of that lens. Then I used the mold to make the "prototype" you see. It looked just like the original including pits and scratches etc from years of wear except I used a solid not clear cast material.

I filled the pits and scratches and now am in the process of polishing it as best I can. I will take this black one once polished then cut it in half carefully with a thin jewelers saw and make molds of each half. Then cast the clear red and then the amber. After both have been cast they will be joined and a final polish done.

So it's black just because that's the casting material I had on hand. The final will be the red and amber. I might be able to do the red as another cast all together. I'll have to see how this goes. I'm close but there are still a lot of things that can screw up and keep me form ever getting there. I'm hopeful and determined not to let this one beat me.

Don't be discouraged - your standards are probably higher than ours. There is no other source, short of installing the crude aluminum adapters that UHaul sells.

I stumbled across someone making lenses in my quest for decals. Thought I'd post that link here and bump this thread back up:
lensesindex
The site is worth checking out, he does some interesting work, a craftsman.

Thanks for being patient. I didn't get to start back on this till first of Aug but I've made a good bit of progress and hopefully will have a set done by end of the week.

I've once again changed direction and now using a new material which I think will be stronger. I have to cure each lens at 112 for four hours so it's added a bit more time to each set but things are finally looking good.

I'll keep everyone posted. I have both halves cast and need to trim them up and glue them together. I've found a special adhesive which is UV and elements resistant and should hold well. I have been trying different gluing jigs to hold them accurately in place and and think I have one that will work. Once I get the first set done I will send it to my friend who first asked me to make a set and get his evaluation after it's mounted.

I'll let you know.
Here is a pict of the unfinished halves and another of the new lenses I have added to my offering. Not had time to post them to the web site yet.
