Tail Light or Turn Signal Light Remaining On All The Time

Happy Boxing Day..

Well not so happy because I stepped out side this morning and noticed that the right turn signal light or possibly the right tail light on my 1975 Trillium is "ON".. The trailer is plugged into 110 for the winter and there is a solar panel..

I have no idea what is going on so any ideas as to what is happening and/or how I can remedy this situation would be much appreciated..

Probably a short in the trailer plug. Between the power wire and the turn signal wire.

Mary and Bob..

I have just spent the last hour testing everything including unplugging the 110 and 12 volt, from the battery to the wiring and have come to the conclusion that, because the other tail light and the 4 clearance lights that are on the same circuit don't come on, that the tail light fixture itself is faulty and requires replacement ;-) Oh yea.. Wish me luck,, The trailer itself is going to be 50 years old next week..

It could easily be the brake/turn signal you are seeing on, and that could be conductivity across the plug or a short in the wiring. I doubt it is the light fixture.

Check between ground and the right turn/brake terminal with a volt meter. Compare it to the left side terminal.

Charles..
Thanks for this suggestion.. I am not a knower of all things and as such I could use your guidance.. I am assuming that you are suggesting that I check the continuity between the left light and then right light.. If my assumption is correct then even without then even without utilizing a multimeter I know that there is continuity with the right light because the light is actually “on” and I can see there is no continuity with the left light, because the light is not illuminated..

Am I missing something??

In the mean time I will take your recommendation because I just might learn something

What you are looking for is continuity between the black wire (battery power) and the brown wire (right turn light) as shown in the above illustration. Since they are next to each other in the plug that is most likely where your problem is.

Yeah I have had so many problems with that plug on multiple trailers. Horrible design. I ended up like giving on repair --- repair -- repair --- repair of the wiring inside this plug. I found a factory pigtail that has the plug molded to the wires and then has a junction box that you hook the trailer wires to. I then even added a way to purposefully turn the lights on when I want to. Here is a post I did on that
