I'd pass on the thermometer and just use the back of my hand. It's not like you need to know the temp within a tenth of a degree. You just need to be able to feel the difference between warm and hot.
Of course, maybe you need a new toy and an instruction manual to read.

IR thermometer at rural king goes on sale at times for $7.99. It has lots of uses besides checking hubs. You can use your hand though if you insist.
