Tire Wear Questions

I currently have 4 DynaTrail trailer tires (225/75/15) on our 1988 Bigfoot Silver Cloud. They have gone about 40,000 miles over 5 seasons, so it’s time to get new tires. I run them fully inflated to max capacity (cold) and have noted an interesting wear pattern on all four tires. They have worn on the outer 3 inches but not completely around the full tire. That would seem to indicate that they are not perfectly round, I think. The outside edge wear, though, would seem to mean they must tip out slightly at the top in order to get at that part of the tire.

What can be done for this on a trailer? It can be adjusted on a car’s suspension, but there isn’t anything to adjust on the trailer axles. Or do I just plan on this wear over the course of 5 years of life?

1]Excessive positive camber can cause your symptoms.
2]Excessive tow-in can as well.
3]Inadequate suspension dampening can also wear the outer edge of a tire.
4] It can also be caused by the tire being out of balance.


If the edge is worn in such a way that it looks or feels scalloped along the edge, then it points to #s 3&4. (most likely #4)



When you get your new tires, check that the wheels are straight and be sure to balance the new tires.
The problem is obviously not serious, since 40,000 miles is a long ways for conventional light trailer tires, and yours have worn relatively even.

Camber and toe in on a trailer axle? This would have to be the result of a bent axle, no?
