Tongue Jack

Hello,
I have a 1973 Hunter Compact II , I took my tongue jack in for repair, the guy in the welding shop said it couldn’t be fixed so he threw it away. I have only 9” of clearance at the tongue and have not been able to find a replacement.
Please help.

Manual tongue jacks are pretty much disposable. You don't give us too much to go on. Was your old jack "top cranked" or was the crank handle on the side of the tube? Do you know your tongue weight? 9" clearance to what? How high off the ground is the bottom of the tongue when the trailer is level?

There are some pictures of Hunters in the gallery. At least a couple show the tongue jacks. Both are top wound. Don't look to be anything special. Looks to be a pretty light trailer.

I recently changed mine, due to an incident which we will not elaborate on to protect the ego of, someone. I just bought a generic one from Casita for $25. These items are not brand specific. It just screwed on with 3 bolts in a triangle pattern. I bought stainless bolts just because... The nuts are usually fixed to the frame and don't come off. I don't know the specifics of your trailer.

I mention the attachment mostly because you don't have much choice of where to put the jack. There are offset plates and such but your's apparently got by without any special treatment. Assuming it didn't interfere before. And assuming the clearance you mention is from the jack post to the closest bit (probably an opening hatchback or tailgate) of whatever tow vehicle you have.

You have to consider the projection length, the measurement of how far the jack protrudes below the tongue when retracted. The jacks are available in different lengths. Or you can buy the Ultimate Jack and not worry about projection length. I put one on our Casita and like it.

Here's a good place to start. When I can, it is nice to support someone besides Amazon. It has specs. I can't judge clearance.

I think I would start with eTriler. com

I had a 1973 Compact Jr that had a smaller hole in the tongue. It would not fit a "standard" 2 inch diameter jack. Have the shop measure the opening. It may need to be enlarged.

My Campster has the same situation, very short clearance under a jack that is mounted into the tongue. I purchased a jack from Etrailer and it works just right. They do give all the dimensions on the webpage. This one is 8 inches on the bottom when retracted so it should work for you.

https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Jac...A20000103.html

Pro Series Round, A-Frame Jack - Topwind - 14" Lift - 2,000 lbs

Item # PSEA20000103

But one of the side mount swing up jacks might also work depending on how much room you have for it. The nice thing about Etrailer is they state the relevant dimensions for making the right choice.

KC's jack is the exact jack that Casita sold me for a little under $25. But the Casita site had no dimensions. Note that the jack is 2-1/4"OD (2" inner tube). As suggested, compare that to the hole diameter in your trailer.
