Hi,

Assuming a dry weight of 2,800 lbs and a GVWR of 3,500 lbs for the trailer and a tow capacity of up to 3,500 lbs for the Venza, I would want a bit more capacity for towing. Assuming the Ridgeline tows 5,000 lbs., I would prefer the extra capacity of the Ridgeline.

Start with the owner's manuals. If you haven't purchased yet, you can download most online by searching something like "2015 Toyota Venza Owner's Manual." You may find that the rating depends on drivetrain, trim, and/or optional equipment, such as a tow package. A dealer VIN check can verify whether a particular vehicle has required towing upgrades.

I'm confident a Ridgeline would be fine. AWD versions are rated 5000 pounds. I'm not sure about the Venza. I would want something rated at least 3500 pounds to pull a 2800 pound trailer, assuming that's the fully loaded weight, not the dry weight.

And don't forget the tongue weight.
We also don't know what year Venza we are talking about. The RAV4, for instance, dropped from 3,500 lb to 1,500 lb in 2013.

We towed a 17' Casita with our 2008 Ridgeline and it did a great job. Our Casita weighed in at 3300 with a tongue weight of 315. Many Casitas have a higher tongue weight but we had just the right amount of bicycle hanging off the back to give it close to the desired 10%.

As indicated, tongue weight is a factor to consider. Most, but not all, vehicles have a listed toungue weight that is 10% of the trailer capacity.
I sounds like the Toyota could pull it but might be marginal. I like having a bit of additional capacity for longer trips or frequent use.

I had the same 3.5L engine in my 2008 Highlander and used it for over 100,000 towing miles. The HL had a 5000 lb tow rating. It worked great with a Burro and even did ok with a boxy SOB trailer. Assuming the Venza is rated for 3500 lbs and has the proper equipment (tow package?), it should do fine with your Trillium.

I purchased a low mileage 2009 V6 Venza a few months ago to pull my 13' trailer when I finish the reno. You do not say where you are located but in Canada, the tow package (not including the hitch or brake controller) was standard on the V6 models. Having that would be important, I think. I have not yet towed with it, but have taken several trips and I find this car to be wonderful on the highway. It feels very safe, handles well and has lots of room for passengers and/or equipment.
