Trailer damaged by road debris

We were traveling north towards California 395, a month into our current road trip, when a car passed us and cut back into our lane right in front of us. They must have hit an object on the roadway as they returned to our lane and kicked it up, where it proceeded to strike the underside of our truck and go flying off onto the shoulder. By the sound of it and what I saw in my rear view mirror it seemed to be a good sized piece of metal pipe. I had no chance to avoid it as the car was so close to us and I never even saw it coming. The truck seemed fine, but at the rest stop we quickly noticed that it had struck the trailer. This is a strong part of the trailer and it must have taken a lot of force to gouge out a hole that size.

Looks like I get to brush up a bit on my fiberglass repair. Feel free to pass along any repair tips, especially regarding matching the gel coat color. If possible I would prefer to buy whatever Bigfoot uses rather than try to custom tint it.

Such a bummer. On the bright side, it’s not an Airstream… You can definitely see the Bigfoot has a thicker fiberglass layup than others, too. My Scamp would not have fared so well.

There’s an old thread “You Can Repair Fiberglass” with tons of information. The google search bar will turn it up.

I’m a little concerned it might have a couple of spreading cracks. If I’m seeing it right, that moves it into the category of a structural repair rather than just cosmetic. I think- and I’ve not actually done it- you’ll need to grind out each crack and drill a little hole in the end to prevent it from running.

You might reach out to Bigfoot to see if they have a gelcoat touch-up kit. A perfect match may not be possible if it’s more than a few years old. Shops that sell fiberglass supplies for the marine industry are another resource.

It wouldn’t hurt to get an estimate from a marine fiberglass repair shop. If you have insurance and it turns out to be more than a simple fill-and-finish, you can make the call about whether to file a claim.

There are several video for fiberglass repair on the internet.....if you choose to do it yourself. Otherwise....a boat shop could repair. Sorry this happened.

We had a tire blow on our 2014 Escape and it caused some pretty good damage to the trailer. I fixed it myself, but it took many hours, and you can tell I did the repair job, I was more concerned with repairing the problem then the cosmetics of the trailer. I would also suggest you take it to a fiberglass repair shop, boat places are a good place to start for that.

I fixed a small road damage hole on our Scamp with a product called marine-tex. Found it online at various prices. It's like white Bondo and pretty close to the Scamp color.
