The steel plate on my trailer jack is worn. More specifically, the holes where the spring-loaded lock-arm pop into are now oval shaped, slightly beveled, and won't hold the trailer jack in the upright position. Other than that, the trailer jack itself works just fine.

Has anybody encountered this problem? For now, I'm using a jack stand to hold up my U-Haul CT because the trailer jack collapses due to the ovalled-out holes. Replacing the entire thing would be costly because the jack is welded to the frame and I would have to pay someone to do all the welding work of removing it all and replacing it, not to mention the cost of a new trailer jack.

Sooo.... is it feasible to have a couple of thick steel washers spot welded to the receiver plate to solve this problem? Has anyone done this before?

The reinforcement might work (especially if it is really just the locking holes which are worn), but another option is to go to a bolt-on mounting plate for the jack. If the jack is a common enough type, the mounts are available separately, so you might not need to buy a whole new one.

To remove the old welded-on mount (or at least to removed most of it and tidy the area up if it is not to be used any more) takes a grinder and some labour, so it can be done by anyone who wants to do it - no welding qualifications required.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

Why not replace with something like this: 2000 LB. CAPACITY RING MOUNT SWIVEL TRAILER JACK Since it bolts on..you can do that, use a cut off wheel to remove the other one.

I thought about replacing it with a bolt-on. But the jack itself works just great, so I'd prefer to save the $$ for the 2,000 other things I need to re-work, repair, and replace. That's why I'm asking if anybody else has spot welded washers on to the receiver plate (or some other fix) in order cut my costs wherever I can.

I suspect that putting on a new jack would be less expensive than hiring a welder to put on the washers... Plus, you can't expect the jack itself to last forever.

You might be able to find the larger fender washers (large outside diameter with small inside hole) and install it with a couple of drilled and tapped holes or rivets to the plate.

An alternative is to get the PIN out of there if you can, sleeve and pin it with something and then drill the ovaled hole out to fit the sleeve, which is all work you can likely do yourself.

The welder I have do work for me has a $35 minimum. A $19.99 jack is just a bit more than half that.
