I am a Wikipedia junkie. I use it all the time to see who was in that movie, how old that author is, where the politician went to college, etc, etc.
Accessing Wikipedia takes bandwidth, and that is a concern if you have a limited data plan or crappy WiFi. More critically, it may be impossible to access the internet if you are boondocking
with no cell signal.
Kiwix to the rescue.
I just discovered this. Their website is Kiwix: Read Wikipedia offline
You can download software for Mac, PC, or Linux at http://wiki.kiwix.org/wiki/Software
Also for iPhone and iPad: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kiwix/id997079563
There are help instructions on their download page: Kiwix Downloads
Once the app and the data files are downloaded, you can read Wikipedia articles without any internet connection!!
Clearly, the major issue is the amount of space you have on your devices to store the files.
I first downloaded Kiwix to my iPhone, and did some Wikipedia searches. Some worked fine, but when I searched for the books by one of my favorite authors it failed.
I next downloaded what I thought was the complete Wikipedia onto my laptop. The search for my favorite author did work here, so that is good. The Wikipedia file on my phone is 1 GB, and the one on my laptop is 20 GB, so I got a smaller version of Wikipedia on my phone. I did find a method described online where I could transfer the 20 GB file to the phone via iTunes, but I don't want to use up all that storage space on the phone.
Their download web page says the Full Wikipedia is 54 GB and the Light
Wikipedia is 16 GB, so at first I may have only the Light
Their content page (http://wiki.kiwix.org/wiki/Content
) indicates the 54 GB version is the All version, and the 20 GB version I got on the laptop is All Nopic. To save 34 GB I can do without pictures!
In addition to Wikipedia, the software can download and display other free content including:
WikiSource – A free library
Wiktionary – A free dictionary
PhET - interactive simulations for science and math
WikiQuote – quotation
WikiSpecies – Species directory
WikiMed – Medical articles
and one of my favorites,
WikiVoyage – a free online travel guide
You should explore WikiVoyage
, especially if have a trailer and are travelling a lot! https://www.wikivoyage.org
WikiVoyage is a crowd sourced free online travel guide. It is like having travel guides for anywhere and everywhere. I always look there when planning a trip.
For some time I have used an iPhone app that downloads WikiVoyage for offline use.
and WikiTrip https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wiki...de/id667205846
