We got a Honda 2000i generator for boondocking, especially for the AC due to the hot, muggy Georgia summer, Then we read the stickers on the generator and the manual. Both places, it warns that the generator gets very hot and not to use it in close places. We had planned to place it in a trailer tongue box, drill a few holes in the bottom of the box, fire the generator up, lock the lid and enjoy the cool breeze. We had also hoped to use the remaining space in the tongue box to store a few of the camping essentials that we do not want to put inside the Egg. Now we are afraid to do any of that. What has been others experience and how do we ensure the generator does not leave in the night? Any suggestions or experiences to share?

There are are several posts here of successful box-mounted installations, so I think with adequate attention to air circulation, it can be done okay. We bought a new Honda generator also and used it on our recent trip to the Smokies. We set it behind the Scamp and ran a very heavy cable lock through its handle and the rear bumper. I'd like to mount it on the tongue at some point also, but I want to get more experience with it first.

Since the camper already has chains on the tongue, I simply ran the chains through the handle and locked it. I carry the generator in the back of the truck.

I have seen DYI sites that show where they mount an 110VAC fan in the box to draw in the outside air that cools the gen.

Note: you must provide adequate air inlet and exhaust outlets.

Thanks, never thought about the intake, but it makes sense. Vi

I used to put it out of sight and chain it to the trailer.

It's now in the generator box I made on the tongue with the propane bottle. It does just fine in there. The bottom is expanded steel for ventilaton and of course I made it so I could open the lid if needed. Hasn't been necessary.
