1977 Boler inexpensive exterior paint

I just finished this project painting the exterior of my Boler with thinned Tremclad and a foam roller.

http://4u2c.it/15wF6

It took 5 coats with wet sanding (400 & 600 grit) after coats 2 and 4.
Overall I'm very happy with the results. Knowing what I do now, I'd do a couple things differently.

1) Primer *everything* (for more even colour coverage)
2) Spend more time fixing stone chips before applying the rocker guard
3) Use Gorilla Glue carefully inspecting for unexpected expansion every 15 minutes

That stupid glue will expand to fill any gaps. When I reinstalled the ensolite on the ceiling I hadn't properly pressed all of it back in place. I was left with a few 'lumps' in my otherwise perfect ceiling repair.
I suppose that was related to the ceiling repair more than it was to the paint. Though it did surprise me by seeping through a few empty rivet holes...

Thanks! The prep and painting was a *lot* of work especially after effectively 'throwing away' my first three coats of red. The finish is shiny and smooth with consistent colour.

Last weekend was our first weekend camping following the re-assembly. It rained hard on the last night as if to show me that there weren't any leaks. I was glad for that but not entirely surprised.

HaHa, me too. I was fooling around one night trying to come up with something for additional storage when it donned on me that I had this ex-truck bed cargo box in my garage doing nothing. I cut a round hole in the bottom to fit the propane tank base and another hole in the lid for the top of the tank. There's piece of chain threaded through the tank and sprung with a rubber bungee to hold it secure. A piece of 3/4" plywood gives the bottom additional strength.
It holds the marine battery on one side and a 5lb propane tank for the bbq on the other. Also in there is an assortment of rope, orange tie down straps (for the awning), jumper cables, small hatchet and weiner roasting sticks.

hey Mark:

when you say thinned Tremclad?, what did you thin it with and what was the ratio of thinning???

just curious, and a total cost of paint etc???

I bought two 4 litre cans (red & white) of the 'oil based' Tremclad for $40 each. I used about half of each can, so it you were doing one colour, a single can may be sufficient.

For thinning, I bought two empty paint cans and mixed about a half liter at a time. I added pure Mineral Spirits (not Varsol or Paint Thinner!) to bring it down to the consistency of Egg Nog. This was purely a trial and error process. The last two coats of red, I mixed thicker 'cause it wasn't covering perfectly. The final coat was thinned again as the thinned paint would allow any texture to settle out better. After about 3 to 5 minutes, the paint would lie completely flat. Note that it was *not* so thin that it would run when put on the trailer sides.

2 * $40/can 4L Tremclad (oil based)
2 * $5/can empty 4L paint cans with lids for mixing
2 * disposable paint trays (one for red, one for white. reused for each coat)
1 * $15/can 1L red oxide primer (used under the red only)
~15 ultra fine 4" foam rollers (10/pkg at Home Depot)
~10 disposable 2" foam brushes for hard to reach areas

various wet-sand paper 220, 400, 600 grit
1 * Litre Varsol used only for cleaning, degreasing and wet-sand cleanup
1 * Litre Mineral Spirits

I think that's most of it...

Of course that doesn't include things like fiberglass repair kit, gorilla glue, bondo, spot filler, rocker guard, butyl tape, butyl caulk, rivets, various stainless screws / bolts, "Plumber's sealant" (used on exposed rivet heads), sheet aluminum, automotive painter's tape, etc, etc...

Thanks!

No, I won't be putting a clear coat on it. If I leave it as-is, I could do touch-ups easily if it ever needs it. Hopefully not for quite some time!

Oh, and a decent respirator (~$45) is *required* if you're painting indoors! That paint really stinks after it's thinned!

Good luck with your project!

Hi, Mark

Beeee-you-tee-ful!
Matches my '65 Falcon station wagon!
Which would tow it like a dream, I might add.

Since you're too modest to post a finished picture here , I'm taking the liberty of doing so!

Fabulous look!

Thanks Francesca!

Now that you've gone and done that I'll have to take and post another picture that's actually *in focus*!

Just washed after last weekend's outing

I added a few more pictures in an attempt to show the finish quality. It's really hard to capture.

There are a few interior pictures in Picasa gallery.
https://picasaweb.google.com/4umfrea...Nw&feat=email#

Note that the curtains only have dots on one side, they were switched at some point between the various photos.

We're planning a few more mods inside.
The list currently includes:
  • new cabinet doors all the way around
  • a fresh coat of heat resistant paint on the furnace
  • re-doing the ensolite seams
  • some form of curtain so we don't disturb the kids if we're using a light while they're sleeping

One picture looks Red and the other two look Burnt Orange, Is that a optical illusion or did you use "Flip Flop" paint?
