A/C and Frig Mod 1989 16ft Scamp
We recently obtained our Scamp and have already began to "dig in"! The original frig had been removed-my husband customized a cabinet to fit a 5000 btu frig, vents out the side existing vent, and placed a dorm size frig above the A/C unit. We also added a 9 inch fan (clip on) that keeps the back sides of the appliances cool! Trial run this past weekend was great-everything worked well! Photos are posted under profile!

Very nice mod. Great use of space, existing vents, and it looks great too.
How are you addressing the water drainage?

Thank you! My husband installed a thin piece of tin under the A/C Unit that slants out of the vent, to allow water drainage! So far so good!

How did you vent the AC to the outside, does the AC protrude from the side or is it internal with just a vent opening? Does the heat coming off the back of the unit completely vent outside or are you getting some of the hot air back in?

The unit itself does not stick out-the back of it rests inside of the external vent that already exists. We have a small 9in fan mounted at the top of the cabinet blowing air to the back-between the fan, and we keep the vent door open while A/C is operating, all the hot air is blowing outside. My husband did drill a few 2-3 inch holes into the cabinet frame that faces the dining booth, for extra venting. I will try to get a picture on here soon of the set up.

It looks like it drains inside? the tin does not cross outside the hatch opening?

The tin extends out when the A/C is operating-we keep the vent door open while its on.
The inside fan is what has really made a difference with this whole set up-the Frig and A/C heat heads right out that back!

In my set up, the exhaust coming from the rear exits directly outside. Fresh air which is needed is pulled from below and enters the unit below and around the sides. The exhaust and fresh intake should not intermingle or be connected. If it is outside the camper that is fine but it appears your exhaust is mixing with your intake and part of your intake on the bottom is blocked? It may work but it would work better if the exhaust and intake are kept separate. JMHO

here is a picture showing the exhaust and intake air being separate, there is some inside air being pulled but there is also outside air being pulled.
