AC/Heat pump??

I am restoring a '79 13 foot Scamp and am considering an air & heat combo. Does anyone have experience with them? Can they only be mounted on the roof or elsewhere in the camper? I prefer not to have a 100 plus pound unit on the roof if possible. Thx.

I'm betting you really don't want that weight on the roof of a 1979 Scamp! In those days, Scamp didn't reinforce the roof for A/C unless ordered with A/C from the factory.

So, if you don't have factory roof A/C don't consider it, unless you want a giant sunroof and floor A/C when it crashes down.

But if you do have factory A/C maybe you're thinking of a heat strip rather than a heat pump?

A heat strip works well with a roof A/C, no real need for a heat pump.
The picture below shows the method used in early Scamp 13s to support A/C on the roof,it is the shaped wooden piece across the ceiling. As you can see it was used in this instance in a newer Scamp.

Hi Sybilcat,
We are looking into portable air conditioners for our older scamp, we are reworking the closet by the door. The ones we are looking at are taller rather than wider, have a single exhaust hose and lighter weight than the window house unit that came with our camper that didn't fit well and rotted the floor in the closet due to poor design. Roof air won't work for us due to lack of support plus we don't want to lose ANY headroom. These are more pricey than regular house window air so we are shopping around ALOT, but that is our current focus. Would this work for you?

What make and model of AC are you talking about?

In Oklahoma, a AC is very desirable in the heat of Summer!

Hi Bill,
I am checking into this one:
Haier Portable Air Conditioner, 8000 BTUs, CPRB08XCJ
by Haier shown on Amazon for $279.99.
We have the flexibility to redo the closet to accommodate this unit.
Does anyone else use a portable in their camper?
Laura
