I recently saw a thread talking about families camping in
fiberglass trailers and thought I should share a mod that we used to make our trailer a bit more family friendly.
When our little guy was still a baby he was able sleep in our 13' Scamp's full size bed with my wife and me. Now that he is moving into toddler status (he's 15 months old) we had to make a change. Given that our
Scamp has a front bath, our options were fairly limited. We ended up building him a small bunk above our feet.
We still wanted to be able to make the dinette up during bad weather, so our goal was to make the bunk removable. We started by adding channel mounts around the foot of our bed:
We were able to screw the channel mounts through the screw holes in the window, thus eliminating the need to punch any additional holes in our egg.
Next we cut a piece of wood to fit in the channel (had to use a fisheye lens for these photos so it looks a bit funny):
Then we found a mattress that fit the space:
And added a bit of protection:
When we need to set up the table, the wood piece fits under the dinette set and the cushion and bed rail go into our car.
We've gone on 3 trips so far with this new bunk and are getting more successful at keeping our little guy from falling on our feet at night with each trip.
