Lightbulb Alternative window options on 1981 16' Scamp

Hi everyone, thanks in advance!

I'm in the process of completely renovating a 1981 16' Scamp with my fiancé.

I've done a ton of research, and this forum has been truly invaluable. But I can't find what I'm looking for by searching.

Has anyone replaced the front and rear non-opening gasket windows on their Scamp with something else? Is this the only option that works with the curve of the shell?

We just replaced the subfloor that was completely rotted out from leaking windows, and said leaking windows are up next. But I'm feeling intimidated by dealing with those gaskets and plexi windows based on what I've been hearing, and I'm wondering if there's another option.

I'd prefer to do myself if possible - to spare the expense but also for the sake of learning to do something. I'm also not confident someone in my town of <10,000 could do a gasket window anyways.

Any ideas? Or are the gasket windows possible with some gusto?

Function is job one

Windows is a key source of heat loss. If you'll be operating 2-3 season, then it is not so much of an issue. Pushing 4 seasons and small trailers get damn uncomfortable. The fix is new custom windows which are made to order so fitment is not an issue.

Alternative window options on 1981 16' Scamp

You are correct, Gabriella. Unless you do some fiberglass work, plexiglass is the only way to accommodate the shell curvature. Somewhere around 1985 Scamp reshaped the rear shell to fit a regular glass sliding window at the back, but the front is still plexiglass to this day.

Most glass shops can do the gasket installation- many vintage vehicles and modern heavy equipment have windows that go in that way.

If you want to give it a try yourself, there are a couple of old threads here that explain the process with some tips. Use the “Site Search/Google” option at the bottom of the search menu for best results locating them.

Best wishes!
