Attachint Pop-Up Fabric: Hunter, Campster etc.

I still have the original 1973 fabric on my Hunter Compact-ii having had new screens and window covers stitched in about 2 years ago.

I was concerned about the fabric sagging or tearing loose due to so few attachment points being used so I used 3/4" x 1/8" aluminum to put a continuous "Band" around both the upper and lower edges. It is attached with 3/16", large head, aluminum pop-rivets.

Here are some pics: (at the end of the folder)

Great pictures! We have replacement canvas on our compact II and I plan to redo that soon.
Does it seem like the aluminum pieces give the canvas better support?
I am thinking of doing six screened windows with clear vinyl covers in case of weather.
I am hoping to only do this once!

The strips pull the fabric evenly whereas the screws pulled at just a few points and could pull out easily.

You might want to rethink 6 openings for two reasons: 1) all of those openings means that many more inches of stitching that will be stressed against and 2) Window material does not crush well and will start showing damage early on. But you might make them entirely removable with Velcro.

We opted to keep the original screens & fabric window covers, it worked for almost 40 years before I replaced them. In inclement weather we just lower the top.

Good point about the plastic window coverings. Perhaps fully removable is the way to go.
I think the loss of a bit of canvas to window openings will be OK. My experience with sail repair tells me that this canvas is barely stressed at all even in the worst conditions. And like you say, if the weather is truly foul we can always drop the top.
Thanks for the warning about the plastic. That will make the project much simpler!

I had considered a strip of wood on mine but like the aluminum idea. I am also thinking of using some velcro like I did on the top. Now that the tires and wheel bearings are done and I am almost done with the icebox redo (finishing) I can focus on the top.
