Audrey, Typically there is an awning rail along the door side of the trailer. Especally on 1976 Trilliums. If you don't have one, a free standing unit may be best.

My 1978 4500 came with a free standing awning:

there is no rail, so I guess I may have to get a free standing one!

That's what we use and it does have some advantages: keeps the clean look and aerodynamics of the shell, you can set it up anywhere in camp to take advantage of shade, views..., and they're cheaper.

On the other hand, if an attached awning is what you want, installing an awning rail is not a big deal.

We installed an awning rail on our Uhaul and bought a bag awning. First tried a rope & pole awning, didn't like it.
