Question Burro Bunk Bed Remodel

Hi all,

Just bought a 1980 13ft Burro. I'm looking to move into my garage to do some updating during the winter months. I would like to focus my attention on the bunk beds as I have a 4 and 2 year old that will be ready for spring camping! Any ideas, suggestions, or cautions would be super helpful. Send pics or link to other ideas. I appreciate the help!

This is my first FB experience, excited to get started.

Bringing this topic back up as I need to looking into putting bunk beds back in my ‘82 Burro as the previous owners removed it.

There is a fiberglassed ledge above the front dinette that I assume is the bunk bed support. Is this correct?

What should I use for support posts?

What I ended up doing

I had the original metal bars to keep the top bunk up. Ended up foregoing the hinges and drilling the top bunk in the the shelf to make sturdy. As long as we are camping with the little ones, we won’t be using a dinette set or bench.
I ised pvc and 2x4 to create bunk rails. I ended up putting two 2x4 on the top. And plan to paint when I get a chance.
I like the pvc, easy to use and I can take off the top railing easily if needed. It was cheap and easy to manipulate. Hope this is useful for others!

I crafted a ladder and slats/railings for both the top and bottom bunks. When our child was 1-1/2 the bottom bunk railings/slats were sufficient to protect from rolling out and keeping pillows/sheets in the bunk. We also purchased an suv cargo area net to net-in the area but used that once. As the kids have grown, we continue to use the ladder and top railings/slats but no longer require the bottom. I also want to do this as I have 3 and 5 yr old grandsons. I still have the original board for on top and the cushions for the bottom, and I can see where the poles go, but I don’t have the original poles. Appreciate any suggestions on hoe to proceed, can I find replace poles?

The rails are just dowels with pipe fittings and scrap ply that I had

So the dowels should suffice instead of the metal piping? Does some of the wood come off the front, and you take the dowels out and the top bunk falls down to become the back cushion of the bench?

The original design uses off-set hinges, but I thought that would put too much pressure on the hinges, so I used flat door hinges and overlapped the wood so that it can fold down. The other thing that I learned from the original design is that you have to cute the ends and hinge them so that it will lie against the curved wallClick image for larger version

The wooden dowels are plenty strong.

The one thing I’m thinking about adding is some sort of pin mechanism that will keep the dowels in while I drive, because I’ve been having to take it down to make it a bench so that the dowels won’t pop out during our shaky drive.
