Inexpensive 12V DC Television

Hello,

Was by a thrift store a few weeks ago and spotted a 22" TV
(Samsung UN22F5000AF) with an external power supply that
was labeled Output 14V DC 3 Amps. Hmmm.. I wondered if
it would work OK wired up for 12V DC in trailer?

I cut the power plug off and grafted it onto a 12 V cigarette
lighter plug cord (5 Amp Fuse). VOILA! It works fine at a
measured input voltage of 11.8V DC.

The TV was only $20 as it did not have a remote... got one on
Ebay for $7 so I am in business for not much money. I have
noticed the same TV on Craigslist Phoenix for $30 to $50.

Hope this saves someone some money over buying a dedicated
off brand 12 DC TV.

I picked up a 24" Samsung TV (T24E310ND). It came with the same 14VDC power brick. I hooked it up to a variable DC power supply and started dropping the voltage to see how low I could go. The TV worked OK down to 12.4VDC, under that the picture started to degrade and die. I plan to run it off the 12V power using a small DC-DC booster to feed it the desired 14V. Samsung is my favorite brand for TVs.

Well spotted. Thanks for including the make and model numbers! Just curious, why are your batteries down at less than 12 plus volts? Not a nice neighborhood for batteries. Bad ground(s), undersized wire, low water?

Your TV should be happy at 14 to 15 volts, check the actual output of your now redundant wall wart! I'll be looking fr that TV.

Hi Damon,

The reason for the 11.8 VDC battery voltage is that I tested
the TV at the rear of the 5th wheel trailer I live in. The distribution
panel is in the front about 30 feet from the outlet. So, under no
load the voltage is about 13.2 VDC (float voltage of the converter),
but under the 2 amps the TV draws at low volume there is a
significant voltage drop because of the light gauge of wire the
manufacturer used and the distance from the fuse panel.

The wall power supply is marked 14 VDC 3A. The measured output
of the switching external power supply was 14.6V DC with no load.
It was surprising that the TV operated satisfactorily at the low
11.8V DC voltage.
