Make Your Own Decals

Saw Martha Stewart making and putting decals on tin and plastic gifts. She recommended getting "water slide decal paper" for an inkjet printer from this source @ 10 - 81/2 X 11 sheets for $10.50, perfect for the two Trillium decals I need:

Step 4 in the video shows how to do it.

I made my own decals to put on mugs for the trailer. The decal paper I bought was very thin and it was a bear to transfer without wrinkling or tearing. I used the lacquer coat but I don't remember putting 3 coats. This product seems to be a bit thicker so I think it would go easier. Let me know what your experience is with this paper as I gave up on mine after three or four tries to get one mug.

I wonder if it's the lacquer that adds some robustness and the 3 or more coats is key.

As I've posted before, you can also make inexpensive decals here.

Custom Vinyl Decals, Car & Truck Window Decals, Vinyl Graphics

Still have free shipping. They also make clear decals to install inside a window. Not as delicate as the above - probably better for a larger item like on a trailer side, bumper or window.

I don't know how well the inkjet ink will hold up to regular exposure to sun and weather, though. I think that they might fade out pretty quickly.

I went to a decal / sign guy to get a reproduction logo decal made for our vintage teardrop. He was the third place I tried, the first two jerked me around for months. He did a good job at a reasonable price and had them done in less than a week. 8 decals, about 3 X 5", $40. These are of the type used on truck bodies.

Yeah Im with Pam, the UV's will probably eat those exterior sticker's up. Kinko's used to make custom peel off letters and such... bet they could do it and its exterior grade material.

Any sign shop that does vinyl lettering should be able to make you anything you want. They use commercial grade outdoor vinyl that lasts a very long time if not forever.

Time now for a completely irrelevant trip down Memory Lane:

I remember learning to make decals as a kid by painting/drying successive coats of clear glue over magazine pictures. Once the requisite number of coats had been applied and allowed to cure the work was immersed in water, which loosened the backing paper and allowed it to be peeled away from the picture.

Of course, that was back before inks used in magazines were water soluble...

Thank you for allowing me this Geezer Moment- we now return you to your discussion!

Francesca

Yea, I think this was just about the same time that we switched from kerosene to gas lamps.

Yeah- and the "magazines" I referred to were the Monkey Wards catalogues. We always tore the pictures out before putting the rest of the paper to work in the..... "outside facilities".

We were rich. We used Nieman Marcus catalogs.

Tom, thanks for the tip - I just placed an order. Pretty neat how you can upload a custom image for them.

I'd really like to use this info to get new decals for my Cloud, but I need a good pic of the original. If anyone has any Cloud info I'd sure appreciate it. She's getting painted right after New Years. Thanks.

I don't know if it's original, but there's this pic in the Cloud registry here:

thank you Francesca for the pic of the side stripes, and Donna thanks for the Willy connection. I've sent him a pm and have my fingers crossed. He hasn't been to the site for several months.

My Cloud should be going to the paint shop in about a week. Still need that pic so I can get decals made....when this happens I'll try to get a file that I can download to other Cloud owners.

Thanx

I ordered a few decals today from Build a Sign. 30% off with free shipping. You can make solid or clear decals (for glass). They allow you to import an image, overlay text and add borders and clip art. The previous decals I bought from them have been holding up pretty well. Cheap fun for me.

Enter site from this link to get discount.
