I forgot to open the outside inlet and outlet ports a couple of time and this configuration DOES NOT WORK. There are two separate air circuits which have nothing in common. The exterior air never goes inside the trailer. It is warmed by the A/C and rejected outside.

Hi: a quick question, What type tool did you use for cutting the deck plate holes? And, how large are they? I've been considering 6" plates. thanks Mike

I used a rotozip with a cutting bit. The rotozip is like a Dremel on steroids. The covers are 6" diameter. You don't have much choice for size and placement of covers due to curvature of camper.

Hi Sylvie,

As any of these low cost AC, it is a little bit noisy. However, I run it in low speed and the noise is really acceptable. The fiberglass enclosure does not induce any additional noise.

I really enjoy this mod and I would do it again.

Does the 6" deck plate vent provide adequate ventilation?

On our rebuild, we are putting the AC unit on the driver's side down near the floor and was puzzling over how to get an adequate flow of fresh air to the coils...On some installs, I've seen them use like attic vents below the unit for the air intake. But I would be worried about dust and debris entering the enclosure for the unit... I'm thinking that using this sort of "deck plate" on the underside (pointing down rather than out to the side) of the trailer might keep any dirt and debris out of the enclosure while traveling. Thoughts?

You may get more debris on the bottom while traveling vs the side, but either way the unit is not operating during travel so the issue is moot. I'd still stick with the bottom for leak reasons.

I wasn't questioning the side vs. bottom...I like the idea of being able to seal it off with the hatch lid and opening up the bottom vent/hatch when you want to use the AC. The question is...does the 6" hatch provide enough air flow or does the attic vent provide more?

I've been using the 6" deck lids for 3 yrs now with no problems, leaks or air flow. The lids come with a large O ring on inside witch seals out all dirt and moisture.

I used this setup last summer and all I can say is that this is working very well. I like the fact that I can close the openings when not in use. The airflow from a 6" opening is enough for this 5000BTU AC. I installed a screen inside the opening that block bugs, pollen and dirt which is a must. The last improvement I had to do is a rain deflector that I install after the cover are removed.

ANSWER: YES, the 6" hole provide enough ventilation for a 5000BTU Air conditionned. I can't answer for a bigger AC.

This is a great mod and I'm very glad you've shared it! A/C is a must for my husband, so this is one of the first things we'll do to our new Burro. I've been concerned about the integrity of the roof with regards to a roof mounted unit, and I don't personally care for the look of a window unit. This seems like the perfect solution! Thanks!

George and I have used the deck 6 inch deck plates and have had no problems at all. Exhaust thru the front towards the back of the car:. Intake from the side. We both put on the side below the seat on the right of the door. You will need to seal. Greg
