New nest for Origami
Origami is my Porta-bote. She used to ride on the side of the Casita, but I added a shell and roof rack so I could carry her atop the bucky.

Note the roller behind the rear bracket. It makes loading a one man operation.

nice nest
Morgan,
I've been thinking of getting a Porta-boat for a long time and on our last trip it sure would have been nice to have.
The problem for us is space. We would want to store the boat like you have, that looks really nice. But we have also been thinking of getting some kind of carrier for the roof. If we had that it would probably be where the motor, etc would travel.
What is the length of your boat?

size
What size motor did you end up with for your 10 8 boat? Do you carry the motor in the back of the truck on a board so it wont roll around?

A man of few words
actually, no words just numbers.
Hmm, :r that size would be to big for the 4 Runner, I think. This is going to take some thought. There is probably no way we could get the boat and a carrier up there at the same time.
We started to get serious about the boat while in BC. We camp at Buttle Lake and it takes Jack about an hour to get to his favorite fishing spot. The boat would be great there.

I use a 5 HP Mercury 2-stroke, but that's too big for the boat. Probably a 3 HP would plane the boat. I'm looking for a 4 HP Johnson 2-stroke, but I think they quit making them shortly after I bought the Mercury in 1999. The Johnson is 10 lbs lighter.
I carry the motor in the center of my new Watt Box.

I'll stand it on it's front and lash it down with straps.

Carol,
The 10' would probably fit on the 4-Runner. Some might stick out over the windshield, but not enough to interfere. They also make an 8' bit I don't know how that would be for load carrying (it's 8'10"). I initially bought a 12' boat, but it was too long (12'8") to hang on the side of the Casita. There's not much difference in price from 8' to 12'. Check out Porta-bote's web site.

Lake Pleasant
Carol,
If you guys want to come down next weekend, let me know. We're going to Lake Pleasant on Wednesday and staying through the weekend.
You get to drive a Porta-bote and try it out in the water. I'll even let you fold it up and load it on my truck. :laugh
If you do decide to get one, check with me on accessories. I bought everything but sails. The only two I recommend are oars and Porta-dolly.

Hey Morgan,
Carol and a few other of us are going to Lake Castas next weekend. Why don't you join us. We could all see Origami and your Solar.

Sorry, Michael, but I've already planned the weekend with my son & his spousal unit. They're meeting us at Lake Pleasant.
Besides, I don't even know where Lake Castas is :E

Thanks for the invitation
Morgan,
Like Michael says, I'll be at Lake Casitas (Southern CA) next weekend so can't join you at Lake Pleasant:cry. Thanks for the invite and the offer to let me load it on your truck. I ususally leave that kind of thing to Jack.:reye2
I showed him the Porta-bote site and it looks like he's finally catching up and developing a real interest in getting a one. :) I've been wanting one for more than a year.

Hype
Carol,
Too bad you can't come, thet means I'll have to load it myself. :sad If you want to come down in the future, just let me know. I know it's a long trip but you can make a long weekend of it.
Tell Jack that the Porta-bote web site is mostly hype, but you can at least see the specifications. It also show pictures of the boat atop various vehicles. You can get an idea what it would look like on your Toyota.

Morgan
Morgan>>Have to load it myself
Morgan, nice looking nest for the old venus fly trap! (Note to those who don't understand this comment .... Morgan's folding boat once folding with Morgan inside, trapping him like a fly in a venus fly trap!)
Anyway, I was suprised to see the roller-assist. I thought you were going to use a couple of strapping wenches to help you.

Charles, it's so easy to load with that $4.00 roller, I threw it plumb over the truck the first three times I tried to load it :hap2
It wound up stuck nose down in the dirt. I really wanted a strapping wench... errr, strap winch. I'll have to justify it another way.

Would've
Yeah, but it would have been more fun (and better scenery) to have a couple of wenches help you load it.
Or would Lee object to you using wenches?

She thinks I should learn to do for myself. Something to do with self sufficiency.

Just notice
Doggone it Morgan, you're right.
Michael, I told you I needed a spell checker!
Morgan, I'm glad you're back in business with the boat. Look like you got room on the rack for a couple of other playthings ... maybe a bicycle built for two?
