One more pic, since I put in the backsplash and test fit the countertop over the lunch hour.

Thanks Walt. They're just the plastic peel-and-stick tiles, but they're lightweight and look pretty good.

I mounted them on a sheet of plexiglass in my kitchen so I was sure they were straight and had tight, consistent gaps, then put the plexiglass up with heavy-duty double-stick. Aside from ease of install, the plexiglass also helps cover up the wires to the upper cabinet and some other lumps and bumps on the ensolite there.

Great idea to mount the backsplash peel and stick tiles to a substrate and then put that in as a whole section. Much easier to change it out later on if it gets damaged or you want to redecorate.

Well, clearly I've been too busy working on it to post pics regularly -- which is compounded by the general ickiness of posting pics in vBulletin -- but 9 weeks after purchase, I'm beginning to run out of restoration jobs. I still need to take it to the glass shop for new front and rear windows, and the upholstery shop to get the cushions covered, but my own to-do list is getting shorter. It's gone from being a smelly, filthy run-down mess to completely usable and pretty attractive. Not bad for nine weeks!

So here's some before and afters....

It's funny as I look at the pics, though: they just don't convey all the stuff you don't see. All the scrubbing and cleaning. All the "where does this wire go" or "Hey, shouldn't there be a bolt there?" thinking. All the bits where "new faucet" ends up meaning "new water system end-to-end". Or all the "how is this AC going to work" thinking.

But now it *DOES* have an all new water system end-to-end, a new electrical system end to end, and pretty much everything else new, too. So long as the frame holds out, it should be good for another 50 years.

Thank you Sandy and Fred!

Fred, I'm sorry to say the screen door is long gone to that great trash heap in the sky. I can tell you how it worked, but honestly, I don't think you're missing much. I thought it took up a lot of valuable real estate. My particular one wasn't in great shape, but I do kind of wish I'd tucked it away for someone else. It seems there is a demand for them.

Next up:

1. Remove the ancient heater. I don't trust it and won't use it, and could use the space back. That'll mean cutting another door, but that's alright, I can do it when I...
2. Re-cut the dinette table top. I don't really like my first go at it and think I can do a better job.
3. Re-trim out the AC. Again, I think I can do a better job there.

Renovating a 71 Eco

Some people, boondockers especially, like those old gravity furnaces because they offer vented heat without power. If the combustion chamber or gas valve is cracked or rusted through, it’s toast, but some just need a cleaning and perhaps new seals or thermocouple. Definitely a job for a person who has training and experience with LP.

Offer it for free on Craigslist and you might get a taker. Just make sure they understand the issues- they are obsolete due to high surface temperatures (skin contact burns are possible), shops typically won’t touch them, and parts may be unobtainable. Written disclosure and liability waiver, perhaps?
