the 3-way fridge in our Casita 16 doesn't need 12V to run on gas, but you have to manually light the pilot. my tacoma can't deliver enough juice to run it on 12V without draining the trailer battery, so the 12V mode is useless. works well enough on 120VAC or gas.

I guess I am gathering from all the posts that the 12V is needed only for the piezo igniter if it is not manually lit. I thought the computer board needed power also. Or does the manually lit ones not use a computer board for temperature control? We can tow with the 12V but usually don't for long just to make sure we don't run down the trailer battery on hot days when running the A/C on the TV. We have a 2007 17ft model so would the fridge be different than yours?

Jann that was my understanding, too. On the newer fridges the board has other controls going on and is always in need of a small flow of 12V, not just ignition.

Casita changed from manual to automatic refrigerators in 2005.
https://www.casitaforum.com/invboard...ctory-changes/

And there is an automatic igniter/re-igniter available for pre 2005 manual units.
When the power selector is set to GAS it electrifies the reigniter and it lights the pilot. By adding a switch you can turn it totally off too. It works with the existing pilot light probe too.

There's also a igniter/re-igniter available for the Suburban water heaters too.

I have both. Keeps life simple with manual units but have the convenience of self lighting or reigniting.

since we are talking gas fridges can any of you actually see your pilot or burner working. the only way I can tell if mine is working is to feel the chimley.

this is just a note on terminology and phrasing. 12V is a POTENTIAL, if it helps, you can think of it as pressure, its always there whether its used or not (unless you overload the circuit by drawing more current than it can deliver). a device connected to it draws current aka amps, which is akin to volume in a fluid flow example
