Scamp 13 spare tire on A-frame

I am at the later stages of a major rebuild of my 1975 Scamp 13. I removed the spare tire from the rear of the trailer as per factory mount because the bolt holes had been leaking and the wood backing was rotten ( I filled 118 holes in the outside of Lazarus, my trailer). My intention was to make a spare tire carrier and mount it to the rear bumper. I did make and mount the tire briefly. But I found the 2 sided bumper is not beefy enough to carry the load without strengthening it.

So I would like to mount the tire on the font of my trailer just behind the jack. I had a t@b trailer just previous to my Scamp and mounted the tire up front, as did many others. It worked fine on my t@B and would like to do the same on my Scamp. The way I attach it is to use a short commercially available carrier modified with 2 muffler clamps that hold it securely to the front jack. The tire would rest on a platform that I have built on the A-frame. Also, on the A-frame is 1 standard propane bottle and 1 gr. 27 battery...same as I had on my t@b. There is no problem with the security of attachment for these items. So why doesn't anyone else do this? Thank you in advance for your answers.

Tongue weight would be one reason. In factory configuration, mine runs around 180-200#. Many people tow with compact SUVs with low tongue weight limits in the 200# range.

I’m having a hard time picturing your solution. When I look at my tongue, I don’t see any spare room. Hope you’ll post a picture of your set-up when you’re done.

Folks that want to carry bikes or a cargo box on the back could benefit from moving the spare to the front.

Thanks for the reply Jon. Although I have been watching and learning from this forum for a long time, this is my first post. I'm just starting to learn the "how-tos" and am not of even that. But I have 5 photos, that if I can post them, should show you what I did on my t@b and then what I propose on Lazarus. Now I have to figure out how to post them...

spare tire mount

Hi! To mount your spare tire onto the trailer jack, is just a piece of steel with 4 bolt holes or ? Did u make this or buy it? If bought, from where? Is the trailer jack strong enough to manage this? Did u modify the battery plate base in any way to secure the bottom of the tire i.e. weld on 2 pieces of steel the width of the tire so it can slide into it and not move around during travels? Thanks.
