Started at the door...

Hey everyone,

Got the frame painted and the body back on it. Inside the garage to start working on the trailer, hung some LED lights on the ceiling and started at the door, it has a huge gap at the bottom so rip off the old gasket, took the door off and started scraping the crap off the frame opening, silicone is everywhere!!!! I there a secret weapon for the removal of it??? My razor blade scraper is crying. While I am here what works the best for filling the screw holes in the fiberglass?

Thanks everyone

Sam

Silcone See if there's something here to help http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...tml#post299447

I just caution you to not use anything with a metal blade. Plastic is a better choice as plastic won't score the gelcoat... unless you really dig at it. Plexi ice scrapers work better than fingernails too

Thanks Donna,

There is great info on the link. As for the gel coat, I am going to be painting the trailer.

Thanks again

You might want to try a plastic scaper: Plastic Scraper for Fiberglass

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

Donna D was first to reply within 5 min. I always suspected that she has radar abilities when it comes to the use of the word "silicone" on this forum

Yes, silicone removal is a PITA and it's a gift that keeps on giving. Even when you think you've removed all traces it can still cause problems when you go to paint.

I use a product called "Tumbler". It's used commercially to remove traces of silicone that can ruin a paint job.

I use a razor blade, works great, but you have to be careful with it, and junk the blade the instant it's nicked.

I was able to find in two places Harbor and Atwoods) a 3 inch rotary cup that had nylon bristles and not wire (although I bought both brass and wire too). This seems to knock it off pretty well. It has a 1/4 inch shank for a standard drill. Good luck. I am fighting contact cement too.

more S_______

The door frame was last night and I am going after the Dap S_______ be gone.
Going the order rotary cup that had nylon bristles GMike suggest.
Donna I have a pictures of the S_________ and I think the PO must have had stock in the S__________ Company and I thought you would like to see what I have.....!!!!

Also do you have a link for the black rubber that goes in the alum. trim?
The door knob is being replaced I am thinking. Anyone want what is left?
I also found out the door is full of foam and I am happy about that, but I have a ceiling insert that is fiberglass and I am wonder if there is foam in there?
If no foam I may have to split the trailer to take it out and fill in with insulation. I hope I don't have to do that..... Anybody got any idea's?

I think we should all peel off all the silicone found on all molded trailers and pave streets with it... that $hit lasts a long time... better than asphalt!
