UHaul Decals - Remove overlay?

My new old CT13 has the original decals with an orange overlay over the lettering on the side. I've seen some that have had the overlay stripped off to reveal the original and I thought it looked neat.

A couple possible downsides are:

Risk of damaging the whole decal in trying to just take off the top layer.

Hassle from UHaul over....whatever they were trying to avoid when they overlayed the original.

Many of us went ahead despite what Uhaul was intending. Uhaul wanted to make it clear that these were not rental units. Kevin did not strip the orange. Instead, he used reflective tape and recreated the Uhaul from the ridges of the letters underneath.

Interesting....what drove your decision not to remove the overlay? Too tough to separate the two layers?

He could not get it off easily and did not want to destroy it. He also wanted to get it on the road to use instead of doing a meticulous restoration.

I remove mine with a hair dryer, took awhile, worked good

Roger, how did you keep from loosening the first layer? That's my big concern - ruining the original decal.

I just heated with the hair dryer and pulled very easy a little at a time, warm on the fingers though.

So, if I understand you correctly, you just heated the decal with a hair dryer and as you pulled on the top layer, the original layer stayed tight? Did you need to clean off adhesive once the top layer was off?

No need it came off clean, heat, pull alittle at a time, slow and easy, start at one cornner, slow and easy, if it dosen't come, more heat a little at a time.

having worked many years for a truck leasing company, I can tell you it is company policy to De-ID (remove company name) from units that are to be sold. It appears that Uhaul did it in various ways, depending on who did it. Ours has had the original decals removed, some other trailers may have had them painted over, some covered with another decal. My experience is that even though there is a company wide policy on procedures, the individual locations do not always follow them. Restoring a Uhaul camper to it's original configuration is nice, and shouldn't become an issue with corporate Uhaul. Probably the biggest problem will be answering the question " where can I rent one"

In the spring or in side a warm building would be a good place to use the hair dryer now here in Michigan as you should be gitting snow right now. If I had more time I would come up and remove it for you, if you waite till the middle of may I'll do it for you.

Probably by now, the Uhaul folks who were supposedly so fussed about the campers and they money they lost in renting them are not there anymore and might appreciate the free advertising.

Roger, thanks for the generous offer. This is a project that I can easily do myself, I just need a little virtual hand holding.

I had the same concern, so I emailed a friend who worked for uhaul & he sent me all the original artwork for the campers. I even have the old hitchworld logos that came on some of them.....anyway, I cut a brand new set of decals & installed them, while I was replacing some of my window seals, and tail light bulbs.....here are a few pics.

My files are setup to be cut, not printed, just like the originals. I am in the process of putting together complete kits for the uhaul trailers, both 13' & 16'.

Not sure yet where I will be selling them yet, either here or ebay, I am sending a PM to one of the site admins in a few minutes to see what I need to do to list a few sets in the classifieds.
