2024, June 21-23: Pink Elephant Rally

The 2024 Pink Elephant Rally will finally be returning to the Pike's Peak State Park near McGregor, Iowa. We just spent 2 nights at Pike’s Peak campground, and while McGregor was kind of closed up, we had a great time in Prairie Du Chien. We even ate at the Black Angus which was our go-to supper club when we lived in Elkader 30 years ago. Nothing has changed there except the prices. The food was still great.

Anyway, the dates for the rally will be June 21 - 23, 2024. Please be aware that McGregor’s main street will be torn up next summer past the downtown, but we were told at the Marquette winery that if you come into McGregor off the Highway 18 bypass, the intersection in front of the Catholic Church will still be open. That will get you to the campground. We do not know what kind of a detour there will be if you come off the Prairie bridge past the casino in Marquette (and past the Pink Elephant!) and follow the river to McGregor.

We will reserve the stone building for Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday night, there will be a snack night and wine tasting. Saturday night will be a potluck. We may suggest a supper together Thursday night for those who arrive early in McGregor.

People need to make reservations for their site expeditiously!
Reservations for the campground are taken 3 months ahead of planned dates. So, if you want to arrive on June 20, the reservation window will open on March 20. Since the campground has been closed to reservations for most of 3 years, it will probably be pretty heavily used next summer. Therefore, be sure to plan ahead to reserve your site and maybe even plan to arrive earlier in the week to get the site you want. We intend to get there plenty early! We can't urge you strongly enough to get online when your camping date window (3 months ahead) opens so that you can find a site! Sites are generally back-in standard electric with potable water available at common sites, though there are several pull-thru and full hookup sites scattered around. We are hoping to be in site 39 as the rally host site, but no sites are too far away.

See you in June 2024!

Reservations for the Pink Elephant Rally at Pikes Peak State Park in N.E. Iowa are now opening up for the week of June 17. Remember that you can book reservations 3 months prior to the date you wish to arrive. We booked our host site (#39) today for Sunday, June 16 - Monday, June 24. The rally will officially take place June 21-23, but lots of folks like to reserve and arrive for earlier dates. Our suggestion is that our group should try to be in the loop of sites 39 - 60, but anywhere in the campground will work. The sites are electric with water spigots available around the campground. There are also 3-4 full hookup sites available. To reserve, use this link for Pikes Peak State Park (NOT Pikes Point!): https://iowastateparks.reserveameric...&parkId=610141

When you reserve a site, please comment on this thread with your name(s), site #, dates, and trailer type so that we can compile a list of attendees.

We will send out driving instructions due to street work in McGregor as the rally gets closer. See you in June!

If you are coming from the south towards McGregor iowa and you’re
Northbound on Highway 13, you will go through the nice looking town of strawberry point.
However they have recently installed speed cameras which they monitor closely. 11 over will cost you $110. No I did not get a ticket there but my old Commissioner is from Strawberry and was there last week. The cameras were the talk of the day at funeral for a Classmate. As my dad used to say “A young rattlesnake is cute but he will still bite you.”
Also keep your windows roiled up.

“If you hang your elbow
out too far
It may go home
in another man’s car”

And Another to remember in hilly NE iowa
“If you pass
On a slope
You’d better have
A periscope”

Both actual Burma Shave originals.

Thanks everyone! Just a quick note for folks coming down from the north…the bridge at Lansing will be closed for a while, so you will need to stay on the Wisconsin side down to Prairie du Chien.

Kevin and I are sitting 6 feet apart and typing almost the same message, although he beat me, as I was including an update on the stone house. We have 25 so far, 27 with Kevin and me. We were able to rent the stone house yesterday. Kevin left a message that the online reservation was not working and suddenly, yesterday AM, it began working. We snagged it for 2 days, before a wedding party got it. So it will be available for use on those days to the group.

For folks who may wish to attend this rally and cannot, as the campground is full, I have a lead on a future cancellation. Please PM me, and I will link you with this person to try to obtain the site for you.

Popularity is high after the long renovation shutdown and “Schools out for summer”. Bridge at Lansing is open again. Lots of water in the river. However, highway 13 is closed for the summer North of Manchester up to highway 3 for repaving. So you’ll have to take a little different route. I’ll have iowa paper road maps at our site at the rally. I like a paper map for navigation or starting a fire or charcoal.

We made a low pass through Thomson on late Sunday afternoon. About 30 to 40% occupied. Camp host was friendly, no construction going on that we could see at this time. Plenty of firewood for sale in Thomson and the basketball court in the park next to the Library had been restriped for ………….. Wait for it. Pickleball.

Site #3 for Saturday Night

Alatha and I (Phil) hope to arrive mid-day on Saturday the 22nd. I was just able to snag site 3 for Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, we probably won't make it until mid day Saturday but hope to see everyone then.

Send me a private message, and I will help you contact her. First come first served.

The Pink Elephant Rally at Pike’s Peak State Park (Iowa) is only a week away! We’ve had a couple cancelations, but the campground still looks almost totally full.

Here is an update on travel and schedule for the rally:
1. Due to street construction on the west end of Main Street in McGregor, it will be very difficult to bring your camper through downtown. Please use Highway 18 west of the Mississippi bridge until you reach the top of the long uphill grade. Then, turn left on Business 18 and follow it into town from the west. When you reach the Catholic Church intersection (west end of Main Street), continue on through on County Road X56, up the hill out of town south. The entrance to Pike’s Peak State Park is a couple miles on the left. Signs clearly mark the way. There is a detour through McGregor for your tow vehicles to get to the quaint downtown, but they don’t advise trailers on that route.

2. If anyone is interested in joining Cindy and me for supper Thursday evening in McGregor, please let us know so we can contact the restaurant with an anticipated number. We are planning on a 5:30 supper at the Backwoods Bar and Grill overlooking the Mississippi River (111 1st St.). They are open for supper in Thursday nights from 4 - 7 p.m. and have a varied menu of sandwiches, salads, pizza, full dinners, and such.

3. We will have coffee (reg and decaf) at our site (39) from 7:30 - 9 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We will also have a few breakfast snacks, but feel free to bring anything you would like, too. Plan to bring your own coffee mugs!

4. On Friday evening from 6:30 - ?, we will have a snacks and beverages gathering at the stone shelter house sponsored by Escape Trailers. Thanks, Escape and their ambassadors Steve and Anita Marchfield! Please bring your own favorite beverages and we will have a cheese tray, veggie tray, ham roll ups tray, and a mixed sandwich tray… just some light things for an after-supper gathering. Again, feel free to bring anything you would like to share.

5. Our Saturday evening pot-luck supper will also be at the stone shelter house at 5:30 p.m. Cindy and I will be furnishing deli roasted chicken pieces, so please bring other dishes to share. We’ll take our chances with not having assigned types of food, so hopefully we won’t have 20 dishes of mac & cheese! Please bring your own plates, silverware, and beverages.

6. We’ve been advised by a friend in McGregor that the gnats are on a rampage this season, so be prepared for little flying critters. Also, scattered thunderstorms are predicted along with warm temps.

See you all next week! Cindy and I will be arriving on Sunday, June 16, to do some sightseeing before the rally gets going, but we’ll be at our site every day by later afternoon.
