2025, September 19-21: Burro Drove

Let's have a Burro Rally!

Recognizing that no single date or location will work for everyone, I am posting a date that works for me at a location that I am familiar with, with an offer to organize and host a Burro Rally for anyone interested/available to join in. Please let me know if you have any questions, and comment below if you plan to attend!

Save the date: 2025 Burro Drove

Friday September 19 to Sunday September 21, 2025

YOUR HOSTESS: Heather of Davenport, Iowa. I have owned my 1983 Burro since 2021. It’s the one with the orange “Burro + Beagle” decals.

DATE: Official activities start on Friday September 19 and end on September 21, though you are welcome to come early or stay late. Unofficial visiting starts when the second person arrives.

WHO CAN ATTEND: The rally is open to all. It is targeted to Burro owners, since we don’t (yet) have a rally specific for our brand, but it is a public campground and all makes and models of fiberglass campers are welcome, as well as those who haven’t yet bought a Burro but are curious about them.

LOCATION: Thomson Causeway in Thomson, Illinois. The campground is an Army Corps of Engineers facility located on the main channel of the Mississippi River, with lovely views, very nice restrooms, and newly renovated campsites with electric/water. The campground is near some nice attractions, such as the Great River Bike & Hike Trail, Fulton Windmill, Bickelhaupt Arboretum, Thomson-Fulton Sand Prairie, and other locations.

BOOKING A SITE: Reservations open six months before your arrival date, so for actual event, the earliest you could make your reservations would be March 19. There is a two night minimum stay. This is a popular campground, especially spots in the PMAN loop where we will try to be, so if you are interested in attending don't delay booking. Recreation.gov has generous cancelation policies, so if your plans change later you won’t be out much. If you do cancel, though, please post in the group that you are releasing a site so hopefully another Burro can take your place. The direct campsite link is https://www.recreation.gov/camping/c...33651?tab=info

WHICH SITE TO CHOOSE: I’ve camped in this park multiple times, and honestly, there are no bad spots, it is just depends what your priorities are. The campground is flat with blacktop roads that are easy to walk or bike around, so anywhere you land, you won’t have any trouble getting to the rest of the group. We will try to congregate in Potter’s North loop, which is closest to the river and has some of the best views. Sites 29-53 are along the causeway, have good shade, and are closer to the bathroom. Sites 54-78 are “on the point” overlooking the Mississippi River, they have great views but not as much shade and are a bit more exposed in bad weather. Anywhere in the South loop sites 1-28 are fine, but may be a bit further from the rally action and can tend to be buggier in damp years.

Since most of our Burros don’t have bathrooms, you may want to keep in mind that there are several bathroom buildings, but just one shower building, which is located in Potter’s North (but very near Potter’s South). Three of the loops are within walking distance of each other.

Below are the loops in order of preference and with their abbreviation
Site Numbers--- Loop Abbreviation
29-78--- PMAN (Potter’s North loop)
1-28--- PMAS (Potter’s South Loop)
99-126— HPOI (Hickory Point Loop)

River Birch campground loop is not on the island and would require a short drive or bike ride. It has not been open the past 2 years due to flooding and subsequent renovations, so I don’t know if it will be open for the 2025 season.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: I plan to model this rally after an Escape fiberglass rally that is also held at this campground (many thanks to that group, who have allowed me to attend with my non-Escape trailer for the past 3 years). A schedule of events will be published at a later date, and will depend somewhat on how many people (if any) plan to attend. The Escape group does several fun events during their rally, including morning coffee get togethers, trailer tour hours, and evening events like a potluck and outdoor movie (there is a really neat outdoor amphitheater at the campground). I'd like to hold some of those events if others are interested, but that can be decided later.

Thompson Causway Sites

Not to rain on your parade, but I have stayed at Thompson Causway several times for the Mississippi River Rendezvous rally.

Note from the inset on the attached (microscopic) high level site map that sites 29 - 53 are on the Mississippi backwater which is usually covered in lilly pads which the bugs feast upon.

The best sites are in the range of 65-74 (on the point). A little bit further away from the showers but still within walking distance.

Hi Larry, I think we've met at the Mississippi River Rendezvous! I'll be there this year also. There's always the chance for bugs but I've been very happy with my site near the amphitheater for the past 3 years. I've never gotten more than an ordinary amount of bug bites, lol. Now the South Loop was another story, I got eaten alive back there when I had a site at that end for another event! I think a lot depends on if it's a wet year or not, which we just can't know at this stage. By mid to late September it should be back to being pretty pleasant! And anyway, I tried to get a higher numbered site out on the point but they were mostly booked in a flash, so I just decided to go with what I know. I remember you were selling your Casita last year, are you fully retired from the road now?

Yes, I remember the Burro and now that you mention it, I believe that I remember you. If I have it correctly, I believe that the "h" of your UserID here on fiberglassrv.com stands for Heather.

Yes, 2024 (with a brief extension into January 2025) was my last year for camping. Just last week, I sold my Casita, so now that I'm trailer-less, I guess that I am "retired from the road".

Enjoy your "Burro Drove" rally and also say "HELLO" to everyone at this year's "Mississippi River Randezvous" rally!!

P.S. Noting that Ken & Ellen have signed up for your rally, this is a "shout out" to them. I have camped with them many times over the last several years....

Hi Larry- I'm glad you were able to sell the camper, but sad you won't be out and about this year. Thanks for the advice and your tips on trailer modifications the past few years!

Hey Larry

Great to hear from you Larry. I hope Heather is right about the bugs going away by the time of the ralley. I sem ot be a biting insect magnet. Guess i'll bring the Clam so I am hide out in it if necessary.

We have a full schedule setup for this year. Wish you were still on the road.

Heather, best of luck with your Burro rally! We have talked several times previously, having been former Burro owners ourselves. Sorry that we can’t attend your get-together since we are scheduled to be traveling back from the Bigfoot Owners International rally in Utah that week. We will be at the Mississippi Rendezvous, the next week, though, on our way back home. Have fun! (I notice that my info line sometimes shows our old UHaul trailer instead of our Bigfoot. I just keep correcting it!)

Sounds like fun, but I’ll be stuck here in Central VA. While my Burro, “Frog’s Egg” could probably make it (perhaps with new tires) I’m not sure its owner could. Have a great time and my ‘83 and I will have you in our minds!

Hi Kevin- I will be staying through for the Rendezvous, if all goes to plan. That's why I tried to have the Burro rally the weekend before, so I could make it double whammy with only one set up! I am sorry I am not able to attend the Pink Elephant rally this year, David and Susan said it was really nice last year. Unfortunately, I have a work conference in June every year, and both last year and this year I am arriving home from the conference the Saturday of your event. Last year I intended to drive up to at least say hello, but my flight was really late coming back to Moline. If I can pop up, I will!

Well if you ever come out this way we will be sure to time an event around your schedule. Hopefully we can post lots of pictures for those who cannot attend!

Burro Rally

Hi Heather. My husband Walt and I will be on site 75 and we are looking forward to this! My two sisters will also be in attendance, one in a Scamp 13 and the other in a Pleasure Way Class B ( she's the rich sister, lol!). Their sites are nearby but I've forgotten the numbers. We will visit our older brother (he's 81) in Epworth, Iowa after the rally. Thanks for planning this.

Site list so far

Hello everyone-

So far we have 12 confirmed attendees, but there are a bunch of sites around us booked that maybe I didn't catch the names of the occupants. Here is what I have so far, if I missed you let me know what site number you have!
