Question baking bread on the road in a portable gas BBQ?

Does anybody bake bread in their portable gas BBQ? I bake bread at home and think I can pull something off using a cast iron skillet and my portable gas BBQ--I have a little 5lb propane tank so will have plenty of power. Just wondering if it's going to burn on the bottom and be raw in the middle
Thoughts? Advice?
Thanks!
Phil

We have tried it. You're right it burns on the bottom and is rather uncooked in the middle. But, maybe raising it up off the grill, with an old cake, or something [for a spacer] would be the ticket.

I've tried it and burned the bottom. I read somewhere that if you use two cake pans, one inside the other, with pieces of crushed up aluminum foil as a spacer between them, that you can do it.

Haven't tried it yet, though.

My favorite is with charcoal and a dutch oven! More coals on the top; fewer on the bottom makes for a great portable oven with no burning on the bottom. They make a dutch oven table now that is collapsable; you build your fire on the waist high table and set your oven on it. Cooking with briquettes is very precise; allowing you to maintain a perfect 350 degrees for the time needed to bake.

Thanks everyone,
I don't have a dutch oven at the moment, so I should probably get a "real" one with a lid that can hold briquettes & give it a try. I'm still going to experiment with my little gas portable BBQ. Maybe with some patience and good luck I can produce something edible.
I will keep you all posted
Phil

You can cook pizza on a barbecue, so I'm thinking flat bread like Focaccia should be very doable. If you're looking to do loaf bread, maybe in a coffee can type thing that could be rolled to keep from burning?

I was thinking of a flat loaf, perhaps in a cast iron frying pan. Maybe I could flip it over half way through baking. I did see a nice cast iron bread pan in our local hardware store, but it was $25
I'm going to experiment and I'll report back. This is a must-do project. I've been enjoying baking bread for the last two years and I don't think we could handle the store-bought stuff again.

Hey Donna - thanks for that great article! I have made cornbread and coffee cake in our Omnia oven Omnia Oven offers baking on the go. We also have used our Cobb - Cobb America : The Tabletop Cobb Premier Portable Charoal Grill and Cooking System . The Omnia is lightweight and easy to store. We recently dug our Cobb out and took it on an extended trip. We forgot how much we like it - uses 8 charcoal briquettes and burns for 2-3 hours. Cool to the touch, farily compact and lightweight. Dave sometimes takes his dutch ovens but they are big and heavy, depends on where wer're going and how much room we have.

Good luck - have fun!
Kathie

First attempt

OK, this isn't perfect, but it wasn't a complete disaster
The loaf is about 5 inches in diameter and about 2 inches high. I cooked it in my 6 inch cast iron frying pan using my $20 portable grill powered from a proper 5 lb propane tank. I cooked it at between low and medium settings for about 12 minutes. It was just starting to burn in on the bottom and was just a shade under done in the middle. Next time I'll cook it on low.
