Dutch oven cookbooks

Found this while I was searching for some Dutch oven cooking ideas. I do not have it yet, but plan to order it. I didn't know if it would be of interest to some new Dutch oven enthusiasts. terry r.

Hi Terry,

It was published in 1997. He may not be the champ any longer by probably knows what he's talking about. You could fill a small library with cast iron cooking books to chose from. I love camp cooking with dutch ovens. I find a lot of the recipes with too many ingredients to take to the woods.

I have pretty much learned, if you can control the heat, you can cook anything in a Dutch oven that you can cook in a regular oven. A good trick is finding cooking vessels that will fit inside the oven on a rack, just like the oven at home. That way, less cleanup of the heavy oven, and a good serving container for the food.

Lately out in the woods, I have been using my new volcano grill to control the heat on my DO. With the hood over the grill & dutch I am getting more confident. The possibilities are endless. But surely not the cowboy way. There are also lots of u-tube videos on this subject.

So glad to hear that about the Volcanoes. Just bought 2 close out Volcanoes, from our local Camping World, for 2/3 the cost of one. We asked for one of those covers for Christmas.

What a deal Terry. About $150 on the shelf. Were they volcano 2's with gas burners? So versatile for baking, grilling, boiling, and frying on three fuel options. Fold down compact for easy take along.
I consider myself just a green horn next to the die-hard chapter members who compete and hold seminars. Cooking in a dutch is relaxing and deliciously addictive. And did you know "...the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designates the cast iron Dutch oven as the official State Cooking Impllement"

David C. made a good observation about too many ingredients to take into the woods. Does anyone know of a DO cookbook that features recipes with 6 ingredients or less?

One you might look at is Sheila Mills' The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook. (Available on Amazon.) I have her first edition -- current edition is 2nd. Although many of the recipes have more than 6 ingredients, (and some do get pretty elaborate) many of them have multiple spices that make the list seem long. I can attest to the tastiness of many of them! We went on two of Sheila and Dave's N. Fork of the Salmon River trips, and even though some of the guides clearly weren't ordinarily great cooks -- they followed her recipes and we ate very well! -- Anne

David, I purchased mine, new in the box, for $49 a piece and they are the three way version... wood, charcoal and propane. Couldn't leave either one of them for that. If nothing else, one will make a good gift.

I wanted to get the Dutch oven up off the ground. I bought one of those tables, but they are too big and heavy to tote around. I would rather take 2 Volcanoes.

Camping World's loss is your gain Terry. I rarely run across a deal such as that. On cook books, really any basic cook books will work except you have to work out the briquette count and placement. With the volcano, you can adjust the air to the fire and watch the thermometer temp on the hood. Diane mentioned the Boy Scout Hand book which has good simple, almost fool proof recipes for learning scouts. Everybody's got a DO book out but you and me.

Fortunately, I know how to adapt my recipes to the dutch oven, when cooking in a fire pit on the ground. Glad I don't have to do that anymore. I am sure there will be a little bit of a learning curve with the Volcano, but I don't think I will trash many meals.

We always check out the closeouts at Camping World. We also got a brand new Cobb grill for $46 without the box. Since I have the box from my original, I have a nice wedding gift for my outdoorsy nephew in the spring. I was able to pic up a roasting rack and some round briquettes to go with it, today.

Camping World has great closeouts in the fall.

My wife is aggravated that I ordered another DO this week. One is not enough. Heck I know some guys that have up to 15 different sizes of DO,s, cast woks, pots and pans, and all kinds of accessories. My answer to her was...honey do you want peach cobbler and ice cream after your stuffed boneless chicken. I believe I won her over to my thinking.

Donna posted this in other places.
I printed it off for reference.
It has 6 or 7 recipes and DO instructions.

Thank you for sharing your proven DO recipes. I added them to my files. I'm planning to keep the charcoal burning at my camps this year. I just built a 14" disk wok for my volcano grill yesterday. And found a flat folding charcoal lighter basket I just gotta own to save space.
