It's blueberry season in the South!!

I'm not sure how Spring is progressing for our Northern brethren, but here in Alabama, it's blueberry picking time! Fresh blueberries picked in our yard this morning, a blueberry and lemon zest compote to drizzle over fresh home-made vanilla custard, and a quick and easy blueberry cobbler that eventually got some of that fresh vanilla custard dolloped over it, too. Yummmmm....

That looks delicious! Southwest Michigan has a sizable commercial blueberry crop, but that crop isn't anywhere near ready, so we'll have to wait .

Nice. Looks like it would be worth the drive.

Great year for blueberries here in the south! They just keep coming and tasting sweeter every day! Buttermilk cake with blueberry/coconut topping. Blueberry ice cream! Getting ready to freeze some to enjoy this winter.

You southerners are driving me crazy! I have a dozen bushes that have just finished flowering. Still got a month or so.

We do have a couple negatives, here in the South. We call them July and August!

I'm jealous! I planted several blueberry bushes a few years ago and I probably don't get that many berries, (that you show in the cut-down gallon plastic container,) from all 6 of my plants combined. This year especially, they are way behind. They are all still in flower, no fruit yet. We've had an unusually cold Spring this year and our whole garden and our fruit trees are all way behind where they should be for this time of year.

What kind of weather do they thrive in?

I don't know, but I'm thinking they must like warmth. This Spring has been the coldest on record, since they've been keeping records, here in the PNW.

They must like the lee of Lake Ontario here in upstate NY. My bushes are over 20 years old & I'm still getting between 4 - 5 gallons of berries from the 12 of them.

They are still green, but lots of berries as of this morning. Can't say much for the rest of the garden. Still covered with black plastic since I wasn't home for the summer last year, and won't be this year. (Those are the blueberry bushes towards the back of the garden).

We are getting a good yield from basically 2 Blueberry bushes.
The 2016 crop yielded 44 quarts, and the 2017 crop was 32ish quarts due to a late freeze. There is a 3rd bush on the right in the pictures, but it has been removed due to poor quality and low yield.

We were getting maybe 8-10 quarts total per year due to hungry birds. So I built that cage in time for the 2016 bloom. It is 6' high x 22 long and 14 deep.

Blueberries are very labor intensive. At least ours are. Very rare for us to pick a cluster. Usually just 1-3 berries at a time.

They thrive in Georgia heat and like water at least once a week, and rich acid soil.

We gave away 29 quarts of the 2016 crop when the 2017 crop started coming in. Looks like maybe 10 to 12 quarts this year of the 2017 crop to give away, as there weren't as many harvested in 2017. We are indeed being blessed, so we share.

Most of ours are used in morning smoothies. With the occasional cobbler, etc..

Don't know if I will live long enough for the Berries we eat to pay for the cage, but learned long ago the cheapest way to go for veggies is the grocery store. This is just a hobby that didn't cost too much to get into, and actually pays us to participate. Only expense now is our time, a couple cups of fertilizer, and some water.
