marshmallows

Ok, how many of you like keeping marshmallows in your campers for hot cocoa, but find they melt and smoosh together, if you store them there in the summer?

I found my solution for that problem by dehydrating them. They become nice and crunchy, but soften up in the cocoa.

Only problem is, they make such nice little pieces of candy, they might not last to go in the hot cocoa.

I thought I was the only one that likes stale marshmallows.

The only good marshmallow is a caramelized one, preferably sandwiched into a s'more.

But, that is a good idea for the small ones, Terry. I know the grandkids like them in hot chocolate. I prefer dark rum myself.

S'mores

I love S'mores, my DH does not. To retain my girlish figure I can only indulge one time per camping trip. The question is, how can I pack ingredients for one S'more? So far this is my solution: put one Rocky Road brand candy bar between 2 graham crackers, wrap in foil packet and heat in pie iron. I'm still stuck with a whole package of graham crackers. At least I can make pie crusts out of them.

I've just discovered that Russell Stover makes an individual S'more which is a chocolate covered square of marshmallow between two graham crackers. This may be my ultimate solution to packing one S'more.

Also, Pop Tarts come in a S'mores flavor. I'd love to hear others' solution to the challenge of making one S'more without having to purchase a bag of marshmallows or a whole box of graham crackers.

In spite of these adaptations, I do still pine for the traditional S'more; a roasted marshmallow that melts the chocolate on the graham crackers and squishing them all together.

How do you dehydrate your marshmallows? Do you simply put them in a de-hydrater that is also used for drying apples, etc.?

I only dehydrate the mini or micro mini ones, so I can pack them up for cocoa. They get hard, like the ones in Lucky Charms.

I use a food dehydrator. I use a little lower temp at first, then do them at 125.

I like to do the really tiny ones so I can add them to my dry, homemade cocoa mix.

Biggest problem with them, is they seem to be more like pieces of candy to pop into your mouth, so they don't go as far for cocoa.

YUK! Am I the only one who thinks marshmallows are disgusting? They're kinda right up there with cotton candy, LOL! I know, I know, what kind of self respecting camper hates marshmallows, roasting them over an open fire, smores. Hmmmmm well maybe I don't hate all marshmallows.

Steve, the only kind I like in the least are the roasted ones, somehow caramelizing them adds a bit of flavour, and takes away from them just tasting like sugar. Plus, the roasting over the fire, attaining that perfect level of roasting, is good fun.

Actually I don't mind it when they sticking together as its a valid reason for the need to put more than one in my cocoa or on a S'mores.

So, you are saying you are like the kids who have no patience to roast them up proper.

My brother eats his hot dogs that way. When they burst into flames, they are done.

I don't know if there's any real marshmallow in the stuff you get at the store, but here's what it's used for-

First marshmallows, now hot dogs mentioned. This could easily get turned into "The Worst Foods When Camping" thread. Next, we will want to wash this all down with soda pop, or light beer.

And my husband says the marsh mellow isn't done until it at least catches on fire just before it goes on the chocolate.
