Of course it would have been even better with Fried Okra..but didn't have any.

Just curious, you must be from out east, Maybe Pennsylvania? I NEVER heard of sauerkraut and pork or Cabbage as a yearly new years feast here in the midwest, until I met my hubby from Pennsylvania.
Now we joke about the day after effects everyone will be having after eating that Sauerkraut. We had Spaghetti and meatballs. :-)

We live in Ohio, but family is from WV. The black eyed peas are a southern thing we picked up from all the years my father was stationed in the south. Terry R.

As New Year's meal traditions go, that's a new one on me! We tend to go with turkey or ham on most big holidays, but this year it was nice out and I cooked some massively thick steaks over charcoal.
When we have sauerkraut it's usually with polish sausage. We brown a bunch of butter in the frying pan, then add the sauerkraut and sausage. The kraut with brown gravy goes on boiled potatoes. My DW makes it as good or better than Mom ever did.

Yes, I did have Sauerkraut and Pork. When I moved to PA 26 years ago, I was told it was a tradition for good luck thru out the new year. I still eat it every Jan. 1 even though I'm out west now. Very easy to throw a small pork roast with sauerkraut and apples in a crockpot.
Happy New Year and best camping in 2012 everyone.

Black Eyed Peas is for Health.....Cabbage(or any type greens, like mustard,or Turn up Greens) is for Wealth.....Ham(or pork in general) is for Prosperity
At least this is what I was told growing up.

Yeap, Polska Kielbasa and Sauerkraut that's our tradition. My German Grandfather always made the sauerkraut when I was a kid. We slice the Kielbasa and saute' it with the Kraut.
I love pizza. And guess what, Polska Kielbasa and Kraut is great as pizza. I use the leftovers for the pizza. I just put it on the pizza dough and add mozzarella, pecorino romano, swiss and a little american cheese.
Gosh I'm making myself hungry. Guess what I'm having tomorrow.

Germans eating Polish sausage, that was sorta like Americans eating Mexican food.
