Saving lettuce

This was new to me, but some may know about it. To keep celery and lettuce fresh, as in crisp, after you have rinsed and dried them wrap the celery or lettuce in aluminum foil and place in the vegtable tray in your fridge.

We kept a bunch of celery crisp for three weeks by doing this. A head of lettuce is now going on ten days and doing just fine, as crisp as the day I bought.

I wonder if that would protect lettuce from freezing in my trailer fridge. We can't every have salads after the first day because the lettuce freezes. I try to keep the fridge turned lower and I have that little fan (don't know if one shelf is better than another to put it on though), don't know what else to do.

Lisa, I know all about frozen lettuce. I have some friends with a monster 5th wheel and a full-size refrigerator. Same problems, even if on a larger scale. My friend says she keeps lettuce from freezing by putting it in an insulated (collapsible) lunch sack. Wonder of wonders, I have 2-3 around here... I think it would be worth a try!

Hi: This isn't about saving lettuce but about cooking it!!! We borrowed a friends 40' MoHo but needed extra fridge space so we borrowed another friends Koolatron plugged into the cig. lighter. All the crunchy veggies pre cut and two heads of lettuce fit in it.
Getting out of the drivers seat I kicked out the plug on the side of the cooler, so I just reached down and lo an behold it wouldn't fit back in so I tried it upside down and it fit...TaDa. Fixed... right...wrong!!! How was I to know it heated as well as cooled

Hi David, I haven't tried this yet, but I was thinking about your post while I was grocery shopping last time. I am going to try it in the future as I always seem to end up throwing away spoiled produce before we can eat it all. It will be a real $ saver.
