Does anyone have a way of making toast without the toaster. I could butter the bread and toast it on a frying pan but I'm hoping for a dry method. Now that I am typing this I realize I have never tried it with dry bread. Hmmm, I'll have to try tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

Get one of those fold up wire toasters for use over your camp stove burner. Once that base plate gets hot you can make nice toast. You have to flip it around as it toasts. Tongs would be appropriate but real campers would rather have the scars of the support wire burns on the tips of their thumb and index finger. It’s confirmation of membership in the fraternity of the stove top wire toaster brotherhood, the TSTWTB. I am not the oldest member but have been a member since 1960.

I have an oven in the new rig but I haven't tried it yet. That wire thing might be worth a try thanks.

We use the frying pan method. Non-stick pan, butter melted in, bread in and pushed around, bread flipped over = buttered toast. Use the same pan for eggs if you like.

Both types work well once you get the correct burner setting. I find the box type better if you only want one or two slices.

I have used and still have the wire toasting thingy for use in a pinch. But do not use the back burner,b/c you might burn/melt the window cranking plastic handle, do not ask how i know this.

I use about the most inefficient toasted imaginable in a trailer - my oven. I'm lucky enough to have an oven, but that's what I use. I looked into those stove top toasters and I'm sure they do work once you learn how to use them, but they had very mixed reviews and my oven works great. But it burns a lot of propane just to toast bread...

I will have to try this. I'm going to have a solar setup that would make an electric toaster a no brainer but it is always good to have options.

If you buy a simple toaster, then you've just bought a one-trick pony. Buy yourself a little toaster oven and you can do so much more with it. I have a Cuisinart toaster oven that pretty much does it all. I usually set it up outside on my home made wheel well table next to the outside convenience outlet. These things, even though they do take up some space, are really multi-tasking devices.

Personally I don’t like dry toast, and the frying pan works great for us and has many, many other uses!

Who said anything about being practical. It's all about creature comforts. I gave up "roughing it" many years ago, just like sleeping on the ground in a tent. Just the way I roll. To each his own.

Not questioning your style of camping, Greg. My mother RV’d solo for 30 years and always had a site with power. You have plenty of good company.

Just questioning whether it’s the right choice for someone that stated they were using solar, which usually means no hookups.

Given a large enough solar bank, lithium battery array, and a big inverter, a lot is possible nowadays. Including the most expensive piece of toast on the planet!

I'ver used both stove top types, and, like Sid, prefer the Primus single slice type over the Coleman. That said, I far prefer a good old $10.00 pop up electric toaster running on my inverter.

Practicality has its place, but so do comfort and fun. I just added an
electric coffee maker to the trailer and it is the best addition I've done in a while.

When you find that the wire toaster doesn't work for you, you can rip out the wires, discard them, and use the base as a simmer plate.
