He's headed for the border. Which one? Does he think Mississippi, Tennessee. Florida or Georgia are somehonw safer, or better?

Hmm .. yeah.

The Top Gear guys got three clunkers. They were given a challenge to paint the cars with slogans that would get the car's driver shot at or assaulted. They each painted a car not knowing what the others were painting or which car they would drive. They were then to drive the cars through Alabama.

One car, a white pickup actually, said: "Man Love Rules - OK" in pink. Pink eyelashes were painted on the headlights. One car said: "Hillary for President". The other car said "Country Western music is rubbish" (These guys are British, OK). I don't remember which car also had "NASCAR sucks" painted across the trunk.

They got a lot of stares and menacing looks as they were driving. This was accompanied by their narration of the experience from a non-American point of view.

The first place they stopped for gas, the station owner asked them if they were a bunch of gays looking to get beat up in a hick town. Then she yelled, "This is a hick town." She called the boys and some fellows showed up in a pickup with a dog in back of course. The Brits skidaddled it out of there as fast as they could with a hail of rocks following them. The only thing that slowed them down was having to provide the fastest jump start ever seen, one that would make a Nascar pit crew envious, to one of the clunkers. I'm not sure if the whole thing was staged or not. They seemed genuinely scared and sped off stopping only long enough to wipe the paint off their vehicles. In one case they smeared it with mustard. The film ended with them heading for the border out of Alabama.

The depiction and descriptions of America by the non-Americans one of those things that either going to make you mad, make you laugh or make you say some unpleasant words. You gotta wonder what was going through their minds when they came up with the challenge.

I'm pretty ashamed that you got to see that - I watched the first 10-15 minutes and then gave up in disgust. Puerile would be my word of choice to describe it.

The part about the clunkers was realtively interesting, particularly as it revealed the difference in car prices - we may pay 1.5 times what you guys do for the same car when it's new (part tax, part higher cost of dealers doing business, part higher manufacturer profit), but in any city here you can buy a $1000 car in an hour, easy. So clearly depreciation is a lot, lot slower for you guys than for us!

But the part about visiting America was just playing to prejudices - it's like a semi-acceptable alternative to racism! Clarkson, in particular, is a very 'traditional' Brit who has to find fault with America in order not to have to acknowledge that we're a fairly unimportant country by comparison. And understanding his subject matter has never been a requirement for him......

So, my apologies to those of you who saw it - I suspect it was pulled becasue the BBC never intended that it would get shown in the US.

Didn't see the clip--thanks Benita for the synopsis! If they had just driven those clunkers through Alabama without "them fightin' words" painted on, the same good ol' boys who were ready to beat the heck out of them would have gladly helped out when the clunkers clunked. Probably would have given them a free tow to the local auto shop, hung around to offer advice, offered free parts and taken the guys out for some barbeque and iced tea.
