Hmm .. yeah.
The Top Gear guys got three clunkers. They were given a challenge to
paint the cars with slogans that would get the car's driver shot at or assaulted. They each painted a car not knowing what the others were
painting or which car they would drive. They were then to drive the cars through Alabama.
One car, a white pickup actually, said: "Man Love Rules - OK" in pink. Pink eyelashes were painted on the headlights. One car said: "Hillary for President". The other car said "Country Western music is rubbish" (These guys are British, OK). I don't remember which car also had "NASCAR sucks" painted across the trunk.
They got a lot of stares and menacing looks as they were driving. This was accompanied by their narration of the experience from a non-American point of view.
The first place they stopped for gas, the station owner asked them if they were a bunch of gays looking to get beat up in a hick town. Then she yelled, "This is a hick town." She called the boys and some fellows showed up in a pickup with a dog in back of course. The Brits skidaddled it out of there as fast as they could with a hail of rocks following them. The only thing that slowed them down was having to provide the fastest jump start ever seen, one that would make a Nascar pit crew envious, to one of the clunkers. I'm not sure if the whole thing was staged or not. They seemed genuinely scared and sped off stopping only long enough to wipe the
paint off their vehicles. In one case they smeared it with mustard. The film ended with them heading for the border out of Alabama.
The depiction and descriptions of America by the non-Americans one of those things that either going to make you mad, make you laugh or make you say some unpleasant words. You gotta wonder what was going through their minds when they came up with the challenge.
