Ah, that's close to true. My '56 small window VW Type I had tangs on the crank pulley, and a slotted hole in the body behind that. The crank (stored in the front) was inserted through the hole and engaged the tangs. Ignition on, "clear prop!", crank and start! Keep in mind that the original 25 HP and 36 HP engines were 6½:1 compression, so it really worked.
Edit: aside: during the gas crisis in the 70's, I used a gallon of
paint thinner, to have enough fuel to get to college classes one day. It pinged, but got me there.
